I’ve fought over 350 BC coastal wildfires from 1981-93 and I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening now in our country with the current wildfire behaviour, prevalence, areas covered and consistency.
Canada is burning.

Hey Canadian nerds! I have held the domain registration for regex.ca for a very long time. When I lived in Canada it was my primary domain, but I haven't used it for years. Does anyone on the fediverse have a good use for it?

I'm going to release it but if you've got a good pitch I'll pay for a 1 year renewal and then transfer it to your ownership.

Please boost for visibility kthx!

I came across this petition.

It is calling upon the House of Commons to extend to and people - the right to claim asylum in by reason of eliminationist laws in their home countries, whatever country that may be.

Amazing fact almost 160,000 people have signed so far.

Only 16,000 shy of being the 2nd most signed petition...EVER!

Closes May 26.

Can someone from mstdn.ca please boost?

I wish I didn't have to tell you about this again, but I do. It's not being reported much in the news — and you know why?

Because it's not 'new' (the origin of the word 'news'), it's old. This has been going on for months now, and corporate news outlets are simply tired of reporting it. But it is still happening.

Canada's boreal forests are burning up.

At least 1100 fires are active, more than 700 out of control. Over 13 million hectares have been burned so far, with no end in sight. It's an unprecedented climate and environmental disaster.

Dr Hotez is a vaccine scientist and a threat to disinformation con artists like the two twits mentioned above. He will have a new book out soon and it is important to spread his book title message far and wide.

Back in the 1980s it was comically easy to steal some performance cars. We had an epidemic of car theft.

They didn't criminalise screwdriver ownership, they mandated engine immobilisers on new cars. The epidemic slowed to a trickle.

The solution to built-in security vulnerabilities is to mandate products without them.

Not to ban tools which might exploit them, leaving the vulnerabilities in place and leaving the crooks able to keep stealing.

🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 Hello Canadians looking for Canadian news (especially if you’ve been dependent on Facebook or Instagram links).

CBC has created an index of Canadian news media which is searchable by location. It brings up an interesting pot-pourri of digital, tv and radio sources although you can search for just one. There’s a French version as well.

I’ve already discovered some new (to me) small newspapers from nearby regions 😃

There is no precedent for what is happening now in Canada. The ongoing forest fires are obliterating all previous records. No matter which chart or graph you look at below, the message they send is shocking and alarming.

Canadian wildfires have burned more than 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) this year, a record-breaking figure that has surpassed scientists' most pessimistic predictions, government data showed Saturday.

The prior all-time high occurred in 1989, when 7.3 million hectares were burned over the course of an entire year, according to national figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).

The area burned this year, in just six and a half months, is roughly equivalent to the size of Portugal or Iceland.

Bar graph shows seasonal areas burned in Canadian wildfires, comparing 2023 to a 10-year average. Current area burned this year is already more than five times the average at this point in the fire season.
Bar graph shows annual area burned in Canada from 1983 to 2023. Never before has the total reached 10 million hectares, but this year's burned area is already there. Previous high was about 7 million hectares.

How "over the top" is this year's #wildfire season across #Canada? The 13.7 million hectares burned (thus far) is seven times the 1980-22 median and is 56 percent higher than the previous highest seasonal total (1989)! That's WAAAY over the top. I spent over a decade working as a makeup assistant. My spouse, a musician. Both of us were in strong unions. We are lucky that we still enjoy those benefits after many years in the business. I am very thankful for the union support we receive.

Why do I bring this up?

Folks, (especially you younger folk) unions are so very important. I can’t stress this enough. Get in one, and make it stronger. Now is that time.

In case you were wondering…

Yes, Canada is still on fire. Even though summer has gone by and the traditional wildfire season is over, hundreds of forest fires continue burning, most of them out of control.

This is intensely sad to me, not to mention frightening, and it’s a blatantly ominous sign that we are in the midst of a climate emergency.

A graph that illustrates how bad Canadian wildfires are...
#Canada #Wildfires #climatechange

breadandcircuses, (edited ) to Canada

The annual wildfire season in Canada is coming to an end. Or, anyway, it should be by now.

But 2023 is unlike any other year. As of yesterday, there were more than 900 fires still burning, over half of them out of control.

Look at the area burned in the second graph below. The damage to wildlife is literally incalculable. Greenhouse gas emissions from all of these fires is off the charts.

Sure, some reply guy will tell you that forest fires are normal and natural and necessary. But not like this. What we’re seeing this year is an unnatural catastrophe caused by human industry — by the oil companies, their financiers, and the governments that support and subsidize them.

It’s a crime. It’s ecocide. And you know what? To them, it’s just Business As Usual.

In , the high school curriculum includes a study in current propaganda (which can largely be applied to ,too) and it teaches them about American exceptionalism, the denial of slavery’s impacts on current day race relations, and the way Americans are conned into believing they don’t deserve universal healthcare. It is a subject of study.

This really sucks. Week after week after week of the same damn thing!

Canada is burning up, and no one outside of Canada seems to care.*

Two weeks ago, when I made a similar lament (https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/110888244313761100) the deadly toll stood at 13.2 million hectares burned. Now it's up to 15.2 million, again with no end in sight. I grieve.

  • EDIT: After numerous comments, I realized that I should have been more specific about that. Because plenty of people DO care, but it seems our governments and the US corporate media do not.

It makes me deeply sad that #Canada had to issue a travel advisory for #LGBTQIA+ travellers from Canada to the US.

I knew it was coming.
I’m American by birth, and it just feels… so backwards… so regressive… that it’s quite literally unsafe for me to visit my home country.

None of this sits well with me.

"I'm sick of these tactics. I see journalists [& cartoonists] bullied by the right. Conservatives are bullying their way into power."
