311-reported a hummer who cut me off while i was crossing the street that had various trumpy/fascy/thin blue line stickers, truck nutz, and a modified noisy muffler. i even had the license plate number. the turnaround on that was the quickest i’ve ever seen, under an hour. the response: they deleted the request entirely!

the most depraved of all UI gestures is the long press that only responds when you let go.

  • can’t tell when it’s been long enough
  • wastes time if it hasn’t
  • what if you simply missed the target
  • what if the ui element next to or behind the target also responds to long press, and takes forever to complete its action

specific example: the “do not disturb” button on the lock screen, which is too easy to miss and bring up lock screen customization instead

do not disturb: two successful long presses, and one miss, which brings up lock screen customization

@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

this example is especially bad because there’s no single-tap action. which means they could’ve just made it a single tap

@beep decisions were made

@danblondell eh, i find long press is basically the same, and force touch is extra hardware i think

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

they should just make it the same as the control center widget, which has that long press but also has haptic feedback, and it expands when it’s been pressed long enough instead of making you guess when to let go. also, it works with a single tap, and it lets you shut it off with a single tap on the icon, which is 99% of what i’m using it for anyway

described in post

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell i can’t remember if it was a physical click or a haptic simulation of a click

Whenever my husband and I stay in a hotel room with two beds, I like to role play like we're two coworkers on a business trip where I get things hot by spending the evening microwaving fish.

@ShiitakeToast @Alice probably because of the microwave

i have a feeling that something like 96% of AI product launches are just rebrands of existing features that weren’t so good to begin with

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@collin some of them even try to sell it as an accessibility feature for people who can’t right good. seems like the same kind of argument nft hype people were making re: compensating artists: not actually solving the problem, but also doing something creepy in the process

my website is kind of like a vlog, but it’s just text on a webpage. sort of a “wlog,” if you will

now all we need is iCloud sync for games, saves, etc. (i’ll be damned if i’m manually typing a webdav password into retroarch using the apple tv remote) https://mastodon.social/@kottke/112457031455385827

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

jk it’s happening (created a special purpose account with an easy-to-type password on my synology that only has access to this one sync folder)

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell well usually i would, but retroarch uses some nonstandard keyboard that doesn’t work with the iPhone remote and doesn’t even support the clipboard locally

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell same, it’s super frustrating!
