Have you ever read/heard a British word/saying and had no freakin' idea what it meant? If so, can you share?
We've set up a glossary for our awesome readers and want to include as many as we can before the launch of OverLondon.
While English is a universal language, there are five million permutations of it across the globe and we just want to make sure we're not flummoxing, confuddling, hazing, mazing or befuddling anyone.
Any help will be appreciated with the power of the sun😊
"The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation" describes to practices Big Tech (and monopolies in general) use to avoid competition and reduce your freedom, and what can be done about it. Key concept is "comcom": competitive compatibility. A #goodread by Cory Doctorow @pluralistic#book
"We’re having a #BIPOC#book fair and inviting all kids who want to be there to come. Join us on Saturday, September 23; we’ll be at #Portland, Oregon’s Norse Hall with a bunch of #books by and about Black people, Indigenous people, and all kinds of people of color. Each kid’s admission ticket gets them one FREE BOOK and the chance to buy as many more books as they like."
Plus, readings & Q&A with award-winning authors Nisi Shawl & K. Tempest Bradford!
Let’s be honest, Goodreads is a dumpster fire and has been for years. Just like Steam reviews, Metacritic etc. These sites are worthless because their review systems are deliberately open to review bombing and other abuses #Bookstodon
My book 'PROPAGANDA: from disinformation and influence to operations and information warfare' treats the subject adequately, comprehensively, broadly, expertly. Information surrounds us. How does information influence work? An expert arrangement of the subject. https://blog.lukaszolejnik.com/propaganda-my-book-on-information-security/
The Climate Book
The Climate Book is a stark awakening on the climate crisis that we're in. My biggest takeaway is how little the Global North (North American and Europe) are truly doing to make a dent in the climate crises. They've done a good job at making it look like they're doing stuff, but mostly off-loaded emissions to the poorer countries that they once exploited for colonial reasons.
Mostly an art book, but it is paired with my poetry. 100 FULL COLOR pages. Each page is suitable for framing. Large 8.5x11in size! Hard or soft cover. High end! 80 lb paper.
I really appreciate all of the support! It keeps my art and our little farm going!
Meanwhile in the #book trade, James Daunt's own bookshops & those he controls via the Watertsones group & Barnes and Nobel continue to prosper...
There are two really simple reasons for his success:
He's a bookseller, and has refocussed these chains on books! (To some extent his success also builds on the lockdown-inspired 'rediscovery' of reading books), and;
his #management is decentralised - he trusts branch managers to run a bookshop suitable for their locale.
Another review at Shiny New Books, this time of the new Folio Society edition of Charmed Life by the great #DianaWynneJones.
Here's hoping more Chrestomanci is in store ...
THE OPPRESSION OF THE UYGHUR PEOPLE explored in heartbreaking detail through an exiled poet and filmmaker’s memoir. Beautiful writing about a horrifying topic brings stories of the imprisoned and murdered into the light. A MINUS
Ukrainian author Artem Chapeye has lived many lives: journalist, activist, translator, and since the spring of 2022, a soldier in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Being a writer helps him to “endure everyday army life,” he said in an interview in June 2023, but “until everything is finished, it is very
Just finished “How to Hide an Empire,” by Daniel Immerwahl
I’m often surprised by how much I don’t know, but this #book really astonished me with my own ignorance. I’m embarrassed to say how little I knew of US colonialism, territories, and global military bases
Immerwahl explains the post WWII #decolonization / #recolonization as a product of technological innovation in a clear (and very readable) way. Highly recommend!
Book of stories serves as reminder that Ukrainian lives aren't just statistics (kyivindependent.com)
