I joined #HardcoverApp 📕 (@hardcover) a few days ago, imported all of my #Goodreads data, and as a #Bookworm, I'm super impressed! It didn't take me long to decide to become a paid supporter. 🤗 It's completely free, but you can become a supporter for some extra goodies.
If you're looking for a Goodreads or #StoryGraph alternative, do check out #Hardcover! Here is my profile:
Bonjour, je cherche un site de type #Babelio, #Goodreads ou #Librarything qui propose dans un coin de leur site un classement des #livres (note ou popularité) en fonction de la nationalité de l'auteur ou du pays de la première publication de l'oeuvre. Vous avez ça sous le coude ? #books
Amazon is filled with garbage ebooks, often a result of keyword scrapers finding trending topics, and then so-called publishers using AI and cheap ghostwriters to generate books. "If, as they used to say, everyone has a book in them, AI has created a world where tech utopianists dream openly about excising the human part of writing a book — any amount of artistry or craft or even just sheer effort — and replacing it with machine-generated streams of text," writes Vox's Constance Grady. Here's her story about the underbelly of online self-publishing.
Loosely related to my yesterday’s thread about „Algokracja” - why do some people prefer Bookwyrm over Goodreads? Is there a reason I should switch too? All suggestions appreciated. #bookwyrm#goodreads#bookstodon#books#reading
#copyright
"The decision to apply pressure to a project needs to be made in much the same way you decide whether or not to punish your child: if punishment is rare and your timing is impeccable so the justification is easily apparent, then maybe it can help. If you do it all the time, it's just a sign that you've got problems of your own."
@ndrei and I have to re-read it, more than 10 years have passed since, and I think I am at a better (even if not necessarily great) place now. Your comment makes me wonder how much I actually remember the details, at least #Goodreads reminded me a tiny bit.
Phew! Finally (mostly) finished importing my #Goodreads reviews into #Obsidian. About 80 lines of Python (comments included).
Still have to go through all the results by hand to fill in data which GR never had to begin with (eg, stuff that predated me setting up 'shelves’ there). I have, in fact, read /far/ more than one (1) cyberpunk novel 🤣
But I can probably nuke my Goodreads account now, especially considering this all came out of an exported backup.
Very interesting thorough article on the outsize role writers and publishing professionals alike ascribe to #goodreads for the mis/fortunes of a book. I'm not quite convinced by Nicole Brinkley's argument that goodreads has no significant impact on sales numbers (this is #Amazon, there's no way they're running it purely for some nebulous market insights, imo), but most of her other arguments I find quite compelling.
Nadia started out as a one woman dev and product team — she’s had to adjust and maneuver along way to becoming the Amazon-free alternative to Goodreads.
#Goodreads, which I now use very sparingly in read-only mode ("what did I think about X book? what's on my to-read list?”) has gotten /so slow/ I'm about to write a tiny script to parse my final export/backup into Markdown to shove it into my #Obsidian vault.
Think about what a low bar that is. I'm so annoyed by how sluggish their site is I'm about to do /work/ to get completely off of it!
I have never made it to #goodreads and its #fediverse alternative #bookwyrm is still underdeveloped. Esp. in terms of user interaction and books catalogue.
Any suggestions? I'm after tracking, occasional short review and recommendation from other users.
"It’s clunkier than other options, but perfect for readers who want a homegrown online hangout."
È ancora gggiovine. 😁
So to summarize, goodreads still has the most functionality, but obviously they sold their soul years ago and now try to shove new releases down your throat. I will continue to use goodreads to organize my reads, but I will probably occasionally check StoryGraph for recommendations (not that I need any, with my to-read shelves having over 60 books)... #bookstodon#goodreads#storygraph#literalclub
