Hotels which only have one size/style pillow and only one thickness of comforter: are they even /in/ the hospitality industry?

Don't get me wrong, I'm equally confused by places with a literal /pillow menu/, but like. no middle ground? really?

If I seem grouchy the next 4 days, it may be due to lack of sleep 🫠

(attached photos are, idk. maybe 1/2-2/3 of the bridges immediately near downtown? There's at least another 5 or 6 not visible crossing the Allegheny on the other side of the skyline, and another just down the Ohio to the left.)

(Other attendees: the jaunt across the river to the inclines is SUPER WORTH IT. Grab nearly any bus or hop over to the old train station near the Westin to catch the light rail.)

You know a conference cares about its marginalized attendees when a random short elevator ride includes not one, but two stenographers. Was too shy to say hello, but if y'all see this, you are APPRECIATED.

ETA: the stenographers were /using/ the elevator, they were not /doing stenography/ at the time 🤣

food trip report:

  • Westin hotel room service surprisingly tasty. You can also save $5/pop by requesting pickup in the lobby. They may end up delivering to your room anyways, but…
  • BaeBae's Kitchen a half block down Liberty from the conf area: very tasty hipster Korean-inspired food. Will have to try their "tofu steaks” sometime (got chicken this time because Fuckit, It's Travel™).
  • BaeBae’s seaweed salad is of the leafy variety, uncommon to see! 😋

Explored the venue, got my badge (ok, not in that order), said brief hellos to a few friends randomly encountered, and reaped the benefits of having parked immediately adjacent to the hotel elevators last night (fetched a forgotten umbrella 😅).

You know how oftentimes our brains "know" something but our bodies or hearts do not? That was me with "you're gonna be socially anxious as fuck, back around large groups of strangers after 5y hermitage”. One thing to know, another to confirm 😬

Anyway, yea. Anxiety levels THROUGH THE ROOF. I'm always anxious as fuck at conferences' first years anyways - completely new context, unfamiliar city/venue/etc, lots of strangers, etc.

And the ones who are /aren’t/ strangers are randomly distributed, ready to ambush you at any time! 🤣

Compound all that with pandemic lockdown 2020s brain and…I'm gonna be in my room periodically, for sure. Plan “spring for the adjacent hotel” was a good idea.

tip: apparently to register and get your badge, you CANNOT go straight from the Westin skybridge to the CC third floor (security will stop you at the third floor elevator if you're not badged).

Gotta enter from street level and make your way up to the second floor via escalator.

@pradyunsg oh she gave me directions very nicely but they were of the form “gotta head back down to street level, take a few rights, enter via the main entrance, and go up the escalator” :D

At any rate I was going by the “Westin peeps can find registration by: skybridge to elevator to 3rd floor to Concourse A for reg” on pycon.us, which, at least for my brain, meant "reg is on the 3rd floor” and...nope!

@mitten I got the sense that the zone between skybridge and CC proper is being updated in some fashion, presumably it'll be better-connected in the future?

For now yea, it's one of those odd secondary elevators that's primarily for the parking garage. I'd take the stairs but they're all warned as emergency only 😅

3 of my tips:

  1. Follow the hashtag (yes you can follow a hashtag just like following a profile!)
  2. If you post and realize you forgot the hashtag, don't delete your post. Just edit it!
  3. Consider following the hashtag also. Many folks use it without realizing that is the official one.

What tips do you have?
