Champ is an incredible picture book about being yourself despite family pressure. Translated from Iranien, Champ is truly a treasure. The illustrations are very unique and I really love the main character who decides to stay unique and different. Despite all the difficulties, he really tries to please his family, but things don’t go as expected.

Mark 10:14 Suffer the little children to come unto me

The Visit to the Brickmaker's by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne) for Bleak House, Chapter VIII, "Covering a Multitude of Sins,"

In essence, Dickens here counters the belief frequently voiced by contemporary middle- and upper-class commentators that the poor "are different from us," they do not find the death of children all that upsetting, and they therefore must be almost a separate species.

This is turning out to be a book I'm not terribly excited about: The Dog Of The South by Charles Portis. The tone sort of reminds me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but set in Texas and Mexico and without the hardcore drugs. Parts are funny, but mostly it kind of drags and I'm not sure what the point is. If I wasn't already more than halfway through, I'd probably add it to the DNF pile. @bookstodon

Chatting with a visiting Kiwi author, Rachael King, in the bookshop today, she recognised me - turned out I had chaired her fellow Kiwi scribe at @edbookfest a few years ago, and she remembered me!

It really is a small planet (especially the literary part of it!)....

Just finished “Record of a Spaceborn Few,” by Becky Chambers

Set in the same universe as (and with some references to) her “The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet,” and “A Closed and Common Orbit,” this is a another lovely, humane look at community, belonging, history and intentionality.

Book 19 of 2024: Gemina by Kaufman and Kristoff

4.5 stars

A rare case where the sequel is better than the first book! I found the romance in this one more compelling, and the characters a little better-drawn and realistic. The ergodic elements continued to be interesting and well-integrated with the visual design. Several plot twists made me gasp aloud. I'm now impatiently waiting on my library hold for the final book in the trilogy to come through!
