If you’re in the area the Fuller Craft Museum in is showing “The Red Dress” project until Sunday the 19th. It’s the last stop on this tour for this dress, so it’s an opportunity! Last Chance! It’s very worth seeing!

So, yesterday fam went to the Fuller Craft Museum to the “The Red Dress” exhibit on its last stop on this tour (it leaves the Fuller May 19th)

While we were there, there’s an exhibit of works “The Button Man”
Some wild stuff!

For anyone unfamiliar with The Red Dress (originally called “Barocco”), it’s an embroidery project that had people (mostly women) from all over the world, contribute embroidery and sewing to create a dress (“380 embroiderers, 51 countries”) if you want one garment to represent a snapshot of humanity ca. early 21st century this is about as close as you’re gonna get.

I would also totally wear this, but only in a hypothetical sense because I would be absolutely TERRIFIED of damaging something so many people put so much work into I wouldn’t be able to move.

And not because it weighs 40 pounds, I’ve worn armor heavier than that lol.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

What’s kind of great about this dress and why I called it a snapshot of humanity is that there are images taken from mythology, folklore, and ancestral heritage that hark back thousands of years and of course, there are hashtags and emoji.

@Catawu I have a batch of photos I took that I’m putting together and I’ll post them, maybe I’ll finally put some stuff in my pixelfed account. 😂

@Catawu Oh Pixelfed is just a “federated” Instagram like platform so yeah it’ll just be a link 😀

For years, when online gaming, when someone said “u mad?” I often responded “yes, but that’s clinical, what’s your point?”
Did they get it?

No but it entertained ME, AND I’ve gotten a few pretty good laughs from rando teammates, so that’s worthwhile.

I was excited to read this study until I got to the sample...all men. So while the headline generalizes the findings, they actually have no idea about how exercise changes saturated fat metabolism in women because they did not study women. When reading studies, always look at the sample. Even today women are being excluded from health studies.

gonna try to scope out some demo iPad pros today, if the apple store is not extremely crowded (or maybe even if it is)

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr I have an older iPad Pro that I tried using as my day-to-day reader when I shattered the screen on my 6th Gen iPad and yeah. Ow. No.

So just as a change of pace, I just had a decent cold call.
Them: “Hi we’re calling about x, interested?”
Me: “nope”
Then: “Ok thanks, have a good day!”
Me: “You too!”

Boom done.

If they were all like that I’d probably still answer my phone. 😂

We’ve been slowly working our way through “3 Body Problem” on Netflix and I finally had my suspension of belief fall out my ass with the episode “The Final Judgement”
Is it alien tech? Nope.
Is it the dimensional theory? Nope.
Was the bullshit* plan to get the data? Ding ding ding!

seriously, after rejecting a missile strike as “being too likely to destroy the data they want” they went with…this?

continued with spoilers next post…

*also gratuitously sadistic, brutal and murderous?

@Lizette603_23 With a night to sit on it, It really feels like the Showrunners said “you know, we haven’t had a good massacre, let’s shoehorn one in.”

I kind of want to go look the book up just to see if this actually is in there because it’s just such a stupid idea from the start.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@angry_drunk @Lizette603_23 Yeah, my wife just looked that up. SMH.

“Ok instead of robbing the bank that’s too dangerous, we’ll collapse the skyscraper it’s in and get the set of china we want to steal out of the rubble!”

Yeah, that’ll work.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@angry_drunk @Lizette603_23 I have, as yet, to read it and that scene did not bump it up on my list.
i’m trying to figure out if I would’ve slid that scene in a book, that maybe having it visually presented showed just how bad an idea it was.
I dunno.

My wife just mocked me for being upset about that, when I accept all the characters in “Fallout” somehow finding each other in the wasteland constantly.
And I’m like, “that’s a standard handwavium trope.” 😂

Our little cat is a weirdo creeper.
When we let him out in the yard with us, he goes over to the side of the house and settles in and STARES into our neighbors kitchen door.
Current theory is that it’s actually that he really likes them and wants them to acknowledge him.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr As an aside I’m going to offhandedly mention “Prairie Fires” which is an autobiography/deconstruction/takedown of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the little house books.
I learned about it from Ana Mardolls recaps of them

http://www.anamardoll.com/2017/11/prairie-fires-chapters-1-5.html

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I will say the one particular note I liked from Ana’s post was pointing out that when the Ingalls set up on tribal land without permission, when the tribe showed up and basically said “WTF” another family that had done the same, the OTHER family said “whups” and left.

free idea: esoteric imdb app that shows me all the people who have been in two shows/movies together. for instance, i noticed a lot of minor characters’ actors from the sopranos in early seasons of 30 rock.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr That would be fun! We started watching “Resident Alien” and then we were like “ok HOW many people from “Reservation Dogs” are in this show!?

@bynkii Last time I was at an Apple Store I asked the person helping me if they were unionized and when they said no I just said “you folks should.”
After I left I was like “WHY did I bring that up!?” 😂
