While there is a lot of hilarious and terrifying things arising from google/AI searches, I just heard about:

https://udm14.com/

which claims to search without AI but also just gives results to web pages about what you're looking for - no sponsored "results", no shit, just places that might have the answer...
Anyone heard of this or know any more?

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@Rob Hey there! You can read about how I found it here: https://tedium.co/2024/05/17/google-web-search-make-default/

Essentially, I really hated how Google buried the Web search in a dialog box to make it intentionally hard to find, so I decided to make the URL tag famous. It seems to be working.

[1] During the past two months, I’ve done a TON of gardening research. And I can’t escape the feeling that dozens of the sites that populate the first page of results (I use DDG, not Google) aren’t exactly maintained by humans.

Suspiciously similar “Master Gardener” profiles + site layouts, random bizarre advice mixed in w/ perfectly sensible advice + phrases that don’t seem to belong. I can’t give you any solid proof, but I’m having a difficult time trusting the written web word lately.

@killyourfm This breaks my heart, but I 1000% absolutely get it. Big tech is just letting the degradation of written journalism happen

Tedium got a shout in today’s TechLinked, around 1:30

So we’re really doing this huh

EDIT: Good news, they actually just mentioned the statement existed and moved to the next topic seamlessly. Danger avoided.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

I have not watched but … my man, the last place you need to be discussing this is on the podcast where you famously run your mouth about everything

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@five82 I just watched. I’m impressed. They announced the summary existed, said they would not discuss the topic otherwise as it was an HR matter, and said they would ban anyone who resorted to harassment.

And then they immediately transitioned to the next topic.

I am actually surprised at how well they handled that.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@patrickhills I just watched it. They handled it incredibly seamlessly. Essentially the fact that it’s the title belies the fact that the spent about 15 seconds on the entire topic and said this forum wasn’t the place for it.

Whew. That could have been a lot worse!

Had a chance to chat with Kat Tenbarge about udm14.com and the Google AI thing for @nbcnews, including how this pop-up site had managed to upstage the best day that Tedium ever had. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/google-ai-im-feeling-depressed-cheese-not-sticking-to-pizza-error-rcna153301

Flagging this in case it’s beneficial for anyone. Amazon has some really good deals on Innocn 4K monitors right now. Not a well-known brand name, but they’ve generally been well reviewed by legit sites.

They’re inexpensive enough that they might be good for a dual-monitor setup.

INNOCN 27" 4K IPS Monitor, $164.99 plus 15% discount: https://amzn.to/3Keqdau
INNOCN 27" 4K Micro-LED Monitor, $249 plus 15% discount: https://amzn.to/4cajFGb

(Sharing with affiliate links, but ignoring this is OK.)

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

I just bought one of the cheaper ones for my crate desk setup, and it was the best deal I’d seen on monitors in weeks.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@nick Yep, that was my thought

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@greatquux I personally wasn’t planning on buying a second monitor but one of my old ones that I use for retro things apparently had a fried power supply. :(

Ran into a couple of Bluesky users upset that I included the phrase “the disenshittification Konami code” on the page.

Good, that means it’s provocative—an important part of building a viral site. (What’s nice about it as well is that by including such a name, it makes it easy to track its spread.)

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

Like, I get it. You think it’s cringe.

But when you cringe about it, you post about it, and that tells other people about it.

You know, how it spreads. Like a virus.

I bet you dollars to donuts that if I had just put something normal on it, few people would have noticed

There no way I can’t sound like an asshole telling this story but in February of 2015 I was in SF starting to work at Slack and mentioned to Adam Savage I was in town so he invited me to hang out on the Mythbusters set then we went out to dinner at Tartine and while we’re ordering there’s a ruckus in the kitchen and we see Morgan Spurlock with a film crew shooting a spot for Amex or something. They’d never met so Morgan asked me to take a photo of him with Adam for his Instagram. RIP!

@mathowie Don’t worry, you’re allowed to have famous friends. Cool story.

With anything suitably technical, the fediverse is the place to be.

I can't believe observers are still doubting the value of this place.

udm14 now comes in an SFW version, for those times when you’re passionate about AI-free search, but you don’t want to get fired or get into a long argument with your parents about en$#!&&ifcation.
