@tylerdave I think I need one of those 2023 stickers…

With nearly 1000 talk proposals, there are plenty of amazing talks that couldn’t accept… luckily, the CFP is open! We’d love the chance to see if your idea is a fit for us.

Hotels which only have one size/style pillow and only one thickness of comforter: are they even /in/ the hospitality industry?

Don't get me wrong, I'm equally confused by places with a literal /pillow menu/, but like. no middle ground? really?

If I seem grouchy the next 4 days, it may be due to lack of sleep 🫠

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@bitprophet The comforter and I are going to have some profound disagreements, I think.

You know a conference cares about its marginalized attendees when a random short elevator ride includes not one, but two stenographers. Was too shy to say hello, but if y'all see this, you are APPRECIATED. #PyConUS

ETA: the stenographers were /using/ the elevator, they were not /doing stenography/ at the time 🤣

@bitprophet I was gonna ask… 😂

I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical
mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob Let’s see…

  • Pink Floyd, Denver, Division Bell tour
  • The Cure, Denver, Wild Mood Swings tour
  • U2, Las Vegas residency at The Sphere
  • Wolfstone, a middle school gym in my home town, sometime in the early 1990s
  • David Bowie, Cleveland, Reality tour
  • Rush, Cleveland, 2011; the show that was recorded for the Time Machine concert video
  • VNV Nation, the tiny stage at The Agora in Cleveland, for the Automatic Empires tour; Ronan high-fived me during my favorite song
mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob More:

  • VNV Nation, House of Blues Cleveland, Electric Sun tour; Ronan gave my daughter a drum stick at the end of the show
  • Cleveland Orchestra, “Bugs Bunny on Broadway” — Live score performance of Looney Tunes stuff, timing has to be PERFECT to match the animation!
  • Cleveland Orchestra, Lord of the Rings Symphony, conducted by Howard Shore
  • Cleveland Orchestra conducted by John Williams
  • The Art of Noise, Chicago, one of 6 dates for mini The Seduction of Claude Debussy tour
mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob I would also tell you that if you ever get the chance to see Weird Al, do it. His shows are brilliantly fun, and he’s got one of the most versatile bands on the planet.

Pro tip for speakers, presenters, tutorial hosts - dark text on white background is more legible than vice versa. The projector does a better job at projecting white light and the dark text shows off in a better contrast. As a member of the audience it’s more legible on a projector screen than white text on dark background - especially from far.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@asx Also, syntax highlighting is no longer your friend when you’re presenting at a conference — especially if you’ve got a dark background. It might look great on your laptop, but with rare exception, the projector is not going to produce something readable by the audience.

🪫 Somehow, all of my AirTags, along with my Eco Bee sensors, have needed to be replaced over the last two weeks.

I'm also surprised how many devices have disappeared despite being "With Me" or lost in a room.

The failure rate of Amazon's CR2032 batteries is 50% at best.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@webology I decided last year that I didn’t need to tinker on code at PyCon and only brought my iPad. It worked out surprisingly well, and I was glad to not have the extra mass from the laptop.

@bitprophet Friday rain chances are looking wishy-washy, peaking at 25%. Saturday looks like anything interesting will be done by lunch time. Sunday and Monday look clear. For rust belt in May that’s pretty decent!

This is a little hard to write, but sadly, I'll be missing PyCon US this year. Long story short: I hurt my knee. Still on crutches. Surgery likely...

I came close to hopping (literally) on a plane and heading out anyway, but it's probably not the wisest choice.

For those of you heading out, enjoy the conference, meet someone new, volunteer, and have fun!

Maybe I'll catch you at the next one!

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@pythonbynight Sorry to hear it, of course, but your health is way more important. Hope you can heal up smoothly!

@onelson We have Corman to thank for cinema’s greatest Jameses — Cameron and Horner.

Picked up since I’m finally done with HZD and haven’t started BG3 yet… sadly not worth the money right now. It’s very cute, and the cat animations are especially good, but the controls are so janky that the main “be cat, do cat things” loop just doesn’t work. I had zero fun in the time I spent with it.

Hey, friends who are more with it than I am… I finally finished the game that was holding me back from starting , but I already feel choice paralysis about character creation. What classes have you enjoyed playing? Or if something wasn’t fun, what should I avoid?

I’ve played D&D since the 80s, but this will be my first BG game.

Witnessed an #aurora for the first time tonight. Magnificent! I commend the magnetosphere for its role in making this possible. A+, would marvel at the cosmos again.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

Guess I should share a couple of the #aurora photos that my wife took tonight. (In my haste to go outside I forgot my phone.)

The aurora borealis shines with pale green and deep magenta, filling the sky above a tree-filled suburban neighborhood.

Inspired by a thing I saw on Reddit earlier today, I’m going to try listening to more complete albums this year. Maybe daily? We’ll see how it shakes out.

I’m starting off with the 2019 mix of Abbey Road by The Beatles: https://songwhip.com/the-beatles/abbey-road-2019-mix

131/366: The Dimension Gate by Aurora Sutra

I waffled a bit about what to pick today as I get back to alpha-by-artist, but after seeing an actual aurora tonight… Yeah. Had to do it.

I haven’t listened to this in a long time, but I remember I really dug the instrumental elements suite in the back half, and the third track, “The Garden of Temptation”, was on a cool sampler from Cleopatra Records that helped expand my tastes.

Got busy over the weekend and didn’t get time for tunes, so I’m going to do some catch up, starting with…

132/366: Twilight by Bôa

I’ve had this sitting in my library forever (because I’m mildly obsessed with “Duvet”, AKA “the song from Serial Experiments Lain”) but somehow had never heard the whole thing. I was a fool! This is really good.

133/366: Telepathic Last Words by Course of Empire

Playing catch-up still from a busy weekend and busy start to the week.

I got turned on to this from the Dark City soundtrack (a great movie, I should rewatch it one of these days). Good stuff from beginning to end.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

134/366: Freedom of Choice by Devo

More catch up; I think this is technically Monday’s pick.

I bought a greatest hits collection way back in high school and just… never listened to the actual Devo albums, even though I really liked their stuff? Not sure why that happened, so I’m fixing that now.

https://songwhip.com/devo-2/freedom-of-choice1980

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

#AnAlbumADay 135/366: In the Garden by Eurythmics

More catching up.

I am very familiar with a few of the inescapable hit singles that got immense radio play in my youth, but I’ve never sat down with a full Eurythmics album, and I doubt I’ve heard anything from this, their debut, at all. Hopefully it’ll be interesting!

136/366: Feel.Love.Thinking.Of by Faunts

Still playing catch up… meant to do F on the road today but didn’t, so I might be behind by a day for a bit.

I’ve been obsessed with “M4 Part 2” ever since finishing Mass Effect, so figured I should maybe listen to some mkre from Faunts.
