This WSJ story on what happened to Bob Lee is a perfect example of why the initial headline often doesn’t tell the full story. Lee had a very active, hard-partying lifestyle that seems to have put him in danger.

And honestly, even his lifestyle doesn’t really validate what appears to have happened—a dude with a real chip on his shoulder decided to take it out on him.

From the WSJ piece, I do have a bone to pick with this quote trying to explain why Lee partook in “The Lifestyle.”

I think that the world can offer us plenty to do, even those of us with millions in the bank. (Not me, to be clear.) I think the problem is that we don’t do enough to encourage the right incentives.

Again, he chose this life. It seems to have fit him. He doesn’t seem to have acted out of turn in experiencing it. But there are always other options.

As a dongle enthusiast, this @mylifeingaming video had me on the edge of my seat.

The gist: Hooking like a dozen vintage systems to a single PS2 Slim adapter, with the help of many dongles and a little soldering.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@mylifeingaming OK, ten hooked up to two, with the potential of cutting it down to one if so desired. Nonetheless, this is wall wart alchemy. I legit wonder if this could work for some vintage systems in my bin.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@polpo @mylifeingaming Giving that you’re doing this with another method, do you think the specificity of the PS2 Slim adapter makes sense?

This piece I wrote about Andy Warhol and the Amiga (which originally ran on NEWART and I just syndicated to @tedium) has gotten a really interesting response. A few people REALLY love it. Others feel uncomfortable about what it represents. https://tedium.co/2023/05/13/andy-warhol-amiga-creativity/

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

And I think that’s a good spot for a piece like this to be, I gotta say. It’s not that generative art is always a positive, but that in many ways, this is a debate that creatives have had for generations.

Heck, even Warhol’s early work sparked these debates.

I think if you’re being challenged by generative AI, you should sit with it for a little bit, stew in it. But also, don’t be afraid to question it.

I’m not going to say this stuff is awesome or terrible or even middling. I’m just going to say that it’s a trend that some will find value in.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

Will you find value in this? Only your ethical compass can say. Certainly, my writing is going to remain human-generated. But in a world where we’ve gained so much from people twisting norms, we should at least let this play out to some degree.

Right-size generative AI to a tool you may not need. That’s how you will find a comfort zone with this.

Would Andy Warhol be a generative art enthusiast if he was still around today? It’s a fascinating question, and one that the Commodore Amiga might hold the answer to. https://tedium.co/2023/05/13/andy-warhol-amiga-creativity/ new @tedium
