I saved my boss from boarding a hijacked flight on 9/11. You won't believe what he did next

Post See new posts Conversation Bill Ellmore 𝕏 @BillEllmore · Sep 11 I was booked on United Flight 93 on 9/11, 2001, flying nonstop from Newark NJ to San Francisco CA. Around midnight the night before, a coworker called me urging me to change my flight to fly into San Jose instead. This meant I had to give up my 1st class seat and move to a flight… Show more Bill Ellmore 𝕏 @BillEllmore The reason my coworker told me to change my flight was she took the same flight on 9/10 and the commute from San Francisco to Mountain View would make me late for my meeting whereas traveling from San Jose to Mountain View would be faster in the morning. 11:42 AM · Sep 11, 2023 · 921.5K Views Mark (Elsa's Dad) Davis, Man of Leisure @MarkDavis8919 · Sep 11 she saved your life with advice, which you followed. what ever happened to your coworker? I have waited three months to share this with y’all.

In the fall of 2022, literally thousands of computers flooded eBay, with a brand name few knew, at a rock-bottom price of $59.99 plus shipping. A YouTuber did a video about them and the machines—2,200 in all—went viral.

Where did they come from? Why were there so many? I spent the last few months determining this answer. And well, it’s a story.

For @Motherboard, the story of the NABU Network: https://www.vice.com/en/article/ak3k34/2200-forgotten-vintage-computers-are-being-liberated-from-a-barn-in-massachusetts

So let me break down how things are going on the internet today:

  • Twitter: Rate-limited
  • Reddit: Third-party apps dead
  • Pornhub: Effectively just got banned in my state because of a bad law
  • Bluesky: Slow as molasses because everyone’s on a single server
  • Twitch: Hear they’re having problems, too
  • YouTube: Working OK but sudden questions about them, too
  • Mastodon: Running perfectly

We can make this work.

A programmer makes a scraping bot. Makes it opt-out. The tool floods numerous websites with aggressive bandwidth requests.

When asked to change how the bot works, he tells the people complaining—led by well-known developer Terence Eden—that they’re getting in the way of progress and that his bot should be treated like a person.

Can we talk about how incredibly awful this behavior is?

This high schooler is a total badass. She caught the Virginia government extending a tax exemption to an org that glorifies the confederacy, called it out, and now the legislature is working to fix that.

Twitter is straight up recommending a space hosted by Richard Spencer. I can't remove this. It's stuck at the top of my timeline

EDIT: I have determined this was because a journalist I was following decided to listen in. (This is a situation where, if you’re reporting, you might want to pull out your secondary.)

Cypress Hill, nearly 30 years after taking part in a joke on The Simpsons where a symphony orchestra joined them on stage, did that in real life recently.

Yes, it was inspired by the joke.

This is really fascinating. A company rebuilt Mastodon’s core functions with a new dev technology that flies in comparison to Ruby on Rails. https://blog.redplanetlabs.com/2023/08/15/how-we-reduced-the-cost-of-building-twitter-at-twitter-scale-by-100x/

(EDIT: They may not be open sourcing the dev tech)
