Whenever you see a new government policy described as “tough,” try this: replace the word “tough” with “cruel.” You’ll then likely better understand what’s going on at the human level.

2024 is a mega election year and the EU elections are taking place this week. This is the 2nd largest election in the world - around 350 million people are eligible to vote.

Just like the elections in India and the USA this year - this one is very important for coexistence on our planet. Therefore, we want to use our reach and call on all those who are entitled to vote to make their voice heard.

We must not leave the EU to the far-right parties and must defend our democracies. Please vote.

Conservative attacks on #BirthControl could threaten #access
#FarRight #conservatives are sowing #disinformation that falsely characterizes IUDs, #emergency #contraception, even #BirthControlPills as “#abortifacients” — something used to cause #abortions.
#Republicans in ≥17 states have blocked largely Democratic-led attempts to pass #laws assuring the right to birth control since 2022.

A friend just pointed out:

"ADHD creates impulse control issues and, consequently, advertising takes advantage of a disability. Ergo, ad blockers are assistive devices and interfering with their operation for commercial gain constitutes a willful violation of the ADA."

Let’s do this.

Same here. I find ads intolerable, will turn away at first sight, repeated exposure (which is part of the concept!) is like scratching the skin over and over in the same spot.

My city is chock full of them. Horrid screens that play bright images, even with motion. At nearly every bus stop. At every big intersection. Many subway stations are nearly unusable.

Is there anyone out there who thinks the #GOP means anything anymore except "I'm a bigoted sadistic asshole and it's my entire identity"?

> It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

this has nothing to do with microsoft recall! anybody you send stuff to can have it compromised. you message your high school friend, she gets caught at a protest, now cops have all that data

you can never control the data you give to somebody else, recall or not

While many reputable companies have pulled out of Russia long ago, American language learning company Duolingo has continued its business in Russia, reveals TASS.

In April, the company was told to censor its app, so Russians can no longer see ANY reference to the existence of persons, and instead of ending its business in Russia, the company chose to help the dystopian regime and comply, writes Latvian-based newsmedia Meduza.

Erasing a culture… for rubles.

Here’s the thing: AI wasn’t created by artists or writers or actors or any other creative types. It was created by those who wish they were the creative types, and want to avoid doing the thing they perceive as “work”.

Here’s an open source phenomenon I cannot stand.

You propose a change, and maintainers agree it makes sense. But! This now makes them realize some other, related-but-independent stuff also could be better. So now they want you to expand the PR to fix that other stuff too before they accept.

PR author gives up. Everyone loses.

Man or Bear: When cycling, I once came upon a black bear off the side of a mountain road. It turned & ran. I have also been followed by a man who I believe was mentally unstable. The police warned him not to follow me. But he followed me 2 more times. I changed my regular route.

Not going to link to the actual review because I don’t care and will not care about the movie in question, but I find it interesting how quickly and thoroughly the meaning of “AI” in the public vocabulary as shifted from “futuristic automated intelligence” to “bad and lazily made”
