Realisticly, how much low quality data would we need to poison ? Is it even possible at this point? Like how many sites would need to write a post stating that we now call Altman an “althole”?

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@mms if I was writing open ai's spider, I'd have it in batches use a deep learning model (not generative text) to score the reliability of the information as it picks it up, with a lower scoring bias for more recent information and higher scoring bias for more reliable and multiple sources. Since it's core data that it trusts is pre 2023, I think we're far too late for any poisoning strategy to be effective outside of niche new information generation.

What’s a good appreciation gift for a team member who cracks the case? Today a network admin in our IT team caught an ancient sftp server being abused and shut it down. I’m thinking a 6 pack of craft beer.

What has your team done for people who go above and beyond in finding and stopping incidents?

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@kemotep @Legit_Spaghetti some organizations have a "this guy did great" cash rewards (with a certain amount usable per employee per year), might be worth asking HR if your org has similar. Also sending a note to their supervisor selling their praise is always awesome too and can help if your org does annual review/performance bonuses/etc . Gift cards sometimes work better than booze unless you know they partake + know their preference, but a six pack is a good idea if they'd like it.

That feeling when you are running a bit late so you rush to your bus stop to find the one bus that services your route passing by your stop several minutes early, and you left your bike at home that day. Oops! Luckily I have other options than a very long hike back, but I wish we weren't in such a chicken/egg problem of ridership/service so my metro could offer more than one a day per direction hit times on more routes (and more routes in general).

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@NBAnthony2k I wish that was an always done on all routes thing, but I find the more infrequent a route (and therefore more useful to have the GPS information to make the connections) would be the less likely it is the driver is broadcasting their location in my metro.

Stupid econ question:

So it looks like a lot of remaining inflation is rent. In that case, wouldn't you want to lower rates to increase home-building and home-ownership in order to reduce rent pricing?

Neblib, (edited )
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I think that'd increase demand further on an already low supply. We simply have a lot of supply side shortages in materials, workers, and prime land legally zoned for cost effective improvements that we need to address before subsidizing demand further (via lowering rates or rent controls) can make much of a difference.

stefan, to fediverse
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

I know some fediverse apps use various text/image detection technologies, so I was curious if this encourages the use of alt text.

The main thing I learned: Out of nearly 30,000 fediverse posts I looked at, almost 80% did not have information about the client app.

That was a bit surprising. And it makes doing this sort of analysis difficult.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@stefan I think mastodon at least only shares the app info for local posts, not federated posts. I'll see if I can find a doc saying one way or another.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@stefan mastodon.py has a similar comment https://mastodonpy.readthedocs.io/en/stable/02_return_values.html#status-dict but I'm only seeing an "Optional" marking on the official docs. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/entities/Status/#application . I tried to scan the source, but got a bit lost and hit the timecap I was wanting to spend looking. Probably could use a github issue asking the docs to be updated.

In Fast Company, I wrote about how wild it is that Ford, GM, and Stellantis no longer offer any sedan models in the US.

That's bad for Americans -- and it's risky for the Big Three.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence @cykonot @davidzipper I think an important clarification is "Americans who buy new cars" as that's the only customer that car makers care about, despite the used market being twice as large. Another point is the data is hard to read with CAFE and tarrifs manipulating the margins of profitability. I predict these trends are going to accelerate with the hemespheric competition going on as well as inflation.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence @cykonot @davidzipper that being said, the used market reflects the new market, and 2023 top sold 1-5 year old models is mostly trucks and SUVs. Also I think Hatchback > sedan, so I'd be okay with better smaller hatchbacks too.

I have some business travel coming up, and our booking system doesn't include train travel as an option. Needless to say, I am deflated. I was hoping to ride to my destination in style and comfort, but instead I am forced to complete this journey in a flying tin can, packed like sardines.

Also, I'm somewhat sure air travel has a higher carbon footprint than train travel. Hmmm... Waaaait... What if I used that angle to get them to spring for train tickets next time?

Anybody use Nextdoor to connect with neighbors, organize events…?

I want to build more community but haven’t been on FB in quite a while. Apparently there’s a ND invite sitting in my inbox. I’ve heard it can be problematic, but then it’s also just a tool, depends on how we use it?

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@tsyum if you treat it as it is - a modern local bulletin board you'd find in a park - its not a discussion forum (even though drunks might try to treat it as such), and filter subscriptions to only your neighborhood and maybe surrounding ones (default will do your whole metro, and will throw other neighborhoods back in for "engagement" if too quiet), it can be a good tool especially for local sales / sharing, community announcements, connections with local businesses, etc.

Hello technerds, I need help picking my next laptop. I currently have a 5-6 year old MacBook air that is on its last legs. I am about to graduate with my bachelors and want to work in a legal/office setting. I game casually

What laptop will get me the best bang for my buck during my early career (and maybe through part of law school if I go in a few years)?

Thanks!

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@kemotep @Minnewegian I'm not sure the comparable used for windows but $1200 would definitely get you more than light gaming and if you go for an equivalent non-gaming build like a lower end Surface Pro 9 (~$800, and v10 coming out this year) you'll get at least around a day's battery with the portability of an iPad and good enough power. There are normal laptop form factors with far better builds too, especially at those price points. Apple ecosystem is important though if you are invested.

Neblib, (edited )
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Minnewegian career wise it's more important to know software than the OS as you'll likely be remoting into or directly using a work computer especially handling legal docs. Get what works best for you personally, staying in the Apple ecosystem is the least friction, but you could probably save a lot switching to something else. You could even skip the laptop and use your phone with a nextdock for out and about and a USB dock + monitors for home if you just need to do office level work.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@kemotep @Minnewegian convergence isn't where I'd wish it'd be in 2024, but Dex works for the most part with official hardware (and supposedly with 3rd party hardware like Nextdock), and I've been able to get it working with usb-c to hdmi adapters, but it didn't like my current usb-c minidock last time I tried. One of my "someday" projects is to try flashing my old S9 with PostmarketOS and try out PureOS's Phosh interface which promises even more integration between mobile & desktop.
