It's kinda funny how spending almost a year away from Twitter makes you see how newsletter bigbrains, university economists, campaign rapid response teams, and MAGA influencers all dunkquoting each other for 14 hours yields absolutely zero impact on electoral outcomes ... and everyone involved should spend their waking hours doing literally anything else.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@teachpaperless you don't even have to fully deactivate if you aren't ready, the mobile site still works (for now) with potentially better privacy (via normal browser privacy tools/addons, etc). The next step to disconnect would be to follow people there on here using one of the repost bots like bird.makeup, but you do lose interactivity. There is also nothing wrong with quitting fully too.

In watching the tech media sites fawn over the latest iDevices...I don't get it. I rode the entire wave of smartphones, from hacking early Mobile phones, through the intro of & , up to the present. It was amazing to watch these devices evolve and mature but every single announcement over the last few years has been iterative and boring...and that's perfectly fine, it's a mature industry. But how can you possibly get that excited anymore?

Maybe I'm just getting old...

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@tilvids @collectifission incorporating more mid-level sensors into the single do everything device is cool, so I do find the 360-capture neat, but otherwise yeah totally agree. I'm disappointed #FairPhone 5 won't come out to the US this year, but the FairPhone 4 is still really cool and available in the US today from Murena. The #Librem5 is also really cool, and better on privacy/freedom, but not as good on sustainability. #LineageOs is probably the better answer for all of us looking for new.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@forteller @tilvids @collectifission Murena sells them in other countries but not the US. "Not available in your country" is what the link reads for me. https://murena.com/america/murena-fairphone-5-availibility/

Water required by data centers is increasing considerably with the advent of generative AI. Large language models trained on vast amounts of data need substantial cooling.

While some may argue that water can be reused, it is often pulled from water supplies in times of significant heatwaves, when residents are in need of it as well, and supplies diminsh faster.

In July of 2022, Microsoft pumped in about 11.5 million gallons of water to its cluster of Iowa data centers, according to the West Des Moines Water Works. That’s around 6% of all the water used in the district, which also supplies drinking water to residents.

Meanwhile, the energy required is of course not recycled – and it’s to be expected that energy use is growing as well. The companies behind the tools are just not disclosing how much their AI investments are costing us when it comes to their carbon footprint.

”In its latest environmental report, Microsoft disclosed that its global water consumption spiked 34% from 2021 to 2022 (to nearly 1.7 billion gallons, or more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools), a sharp increase compared to previous years that outside researchers tie to its AI research.”

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@axbom it'd be really neat if data centers could be forced to use grey water instead of municipal water and their produced heat could be used for municipal heating like how some cities use industrial heat.

Ah yes, this is a great way to turn “Can I see your driver’s license?” into “Can you hand me your unlocked phone so I can rifle through it?” at a traffic stop.

Yes, it’s more convenient than having a separate card, and it may serve as a great backup in case your physical card is lost or damaged. But please don’t use this as your only driver’s license, especially if you are an often-targeted demographic.

“Californians can now carry driver’s licenses on their phone as part of pilot program”

Neblib,

@drahardja I wonder if you can mitigate the risk by making it run in a restricted sandbox requiring passcode to exit similar to kids apps.

I haven't read the article yet but I'd assume there would have to be a verifiable public key that can be used to validate the authenticity, otherwise this would be super easy to fake, especially for use cases like validating age.

I was able to get my kbin thread booster bot for the NL mastodon working. Mastodon seems to still have some weirdness with Lemmy posts to Kbin showing up as Lemmy links instead of posts, but the bot is correctly finding the kbin threads and boosting them, which is allowing the posts to be visible to the NL Mastodon users. You can also follow @nl_kbin_booster from other Mastodon accounts too. I'll get the code out here in the next few days but let me know if you have any thoughts or questions.

Neblib, (edited )
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@CoffeeAddict that's correct. I had a bug in my scheduler last night which made it miss your Armenia post, but I ran with a wider window to pick up those and it should be working now.
The bot pulls the thread RSS at https://kbin.social/rss?magazine=Neoliberal once an hour and then for each post since the last run:

  • performs a search on the masto instance to get the post federated and get the masto post id
  • checks to see if it's already been boosted by the bot
  • boosts it if not yet boosted.
Neblib, (edited )
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@CoffeeAddict I could make it run more aggressively, but I figure an hour should be fine. I went with RSS as KBin's API is very undocumented. Interestingly, I just found out this morning they also support jsonfeed, which could allow me to remove a rss reading dependency.

I'm going to make the main repo for this project on #Codeberg instead of Github, though I'm working on putting up a mirror over there too. Mining for lithium "is harming biodiversity and aggravating the climate crisis," say the indigenous people from the Andes who march for themselves and Nature.

"No, no, you don't understand," say the supporters of the Green Transition. "We must mine to save Nature. We must mine your mountains and the deep seas to save the environment. You people have no education. You don't see the big picture, like we do."

I think this can work by listening to the magazine's thread RSS feed (or pinging the API) then using the masto api to have a bot user boost that post.

@OtherwiseJunk - since you've written a Masto bot for our instance before, does that make sense? Would you be open to adding it (or taking a PR to add it) to the Deep State Bot scripts or do you think this would be better in a separate bot?
