Slyence, to feminism
@Slyence@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

Young men aren’t being forced to follow toxic masculine icons like Tate and Peterson, they’re choosing to consume their content over healthy masculine icons.

Models for healthy masculinity exist. They’re unpopular, because young men don’t want to be healthy. They are choosing to be toxic.

So let’s all remember who is at fault and who needs to change here - it’s the menfolk, not everyone else. Stay fabulous. Get a cat.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence I never understood the desire to follow masculinity icons of any variety. There are masculine people I follow but they are being masculine in other avenues of life - work, family, spiritually, hobbies, etc. Masculinity icons and media, where they explore life primarily through a hyper gendered lens are weird to me. Genders exist but they are just one facet of life, and it's a really weird thing to tribalise on when humanity can express them in such complex spectrum of possibilities.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence I think like most tribalism it's insecure people looking for easy answers in a complex scary world, but we really should be giving tools to the next generation to navigate things without needing blinding simplifications.

I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@publicvoit if you only use things out of the box it's easier to switch out. Proprietary sync and publish can keep in non-technical users, but that's easy enough to replace with open tools. Notes made in Obssidian work can be opened in any md editor, but getting themes, keybindings, and file structure / backlinks the same when possible has cost. Plugins (even open) can be the hardest part of moving, as typically proprietary tools use custom APIs and DSLs and devs don't separate their concerns.

@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

Finally figured out getting working for in on (for whenever I can't be in wsl or a better OS) by hard-coding my values as advised by this stackoverflow answer https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/14952/how-do-i-set-up-hunspell-on-a-windows-pc#comment68406_22311 . I tried so many other ways of getting it working but I kept breaking on it not knowing my LANG (since not defined in windows) and my dictionary list wasn't loading with the regular instructions. Sometimes dumb and working is better than smart and in a rabbit hole.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@kemotep yeah, I probably should too :(

Neblib, to emacs
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

#emacs is such a rabbit hole. I spent too much time playing with my Android setup with the #fdroid version and Unexpected Keyboard and it works surprisingly well. I'm going to need to either build myself or use the sourceforge release since fdroid doesn't have gnutls, and likely the termux compatible build as I'll likely need more packages. Eventually I'll try syncing up with my desktop config. I still don't fully understand why the f-droid version is stuck at the Feb build...

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@lf_araujo orgmode yes, tramp exists but android doesn't have most protocol tools builtin, in-line images seem like they should work but I couldn't get it working with a jpg (I'm probably doing something dumb the inline commands are there). The sourceforge version with termux linking should solve the tramp issues since you can install more tools.

I recommend making sure you aren't disabling the menu and toolbars and enable a full virtual keyboard like Unexpected Keyboard to get C- and M- keys.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@lf_araujo nope, but installing emacs via termux is another way to go, but you'll miss android menu's and other integration. The maintainer porting emacs to android is releasing the android apks on sourceforge, and there is a copy of termux that is built and signed with the same key as the android emacs build so they can cross the app sandboxes that normally block access between the two apps. https://sourceforge.net/projects/android-ports-for-gnu-emacs/files/

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@lf_araujo you can also build from source https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/tree/java which I think I want to try as even though SF has cleaned itself up a decade ago, the adware incident still stings in my memory.

@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

Good news and bad news for users if :

They're working on a DB version in parallel that will provide better scalability, performance and realtime (). They'll charge for RTC.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the end for markup as they are implementing only now and a conversion feature later on. 😞

Therefore, logseq is not an option for me any more and I'll need to think about a migration strategy for my wife.

https://discuss.logseq.com/t/why-the-database-version-and-how-its-going/26744

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@publicvoit huge bummer! Hopefully some of the community can bring back (and hopefully further enhance) OD support once the APIs stabilize.

I probably should accelerate my plan to learn and figure out syncing my knowledge graph with org-roam just in case.

@NBAnthony2k@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

Its crazy that just laid off their entire SuperCharger team.

It is REALLY REALLY difficult to justify buying another vehicle that isnt a Tesla, solely because you're shooting yourself in the foot wrt charging. Tesla chargers are just miles better, more convenient and more numerous.

If that advantage is gone, I don't really see how Tesla is going to compete.

I'm looking for a good name to use for my pinboard/rss reader competitor. The pitch is something along the lines of "community driven website collection and discovery".

— The working name is "pinlog", but I'm not entirely satisfied with that.
— Beanbag just came to mind, but unfortunately I cannot find a good domain.
— Dartboard.com costs $46,000.

Any ideas?

:lets_fucking_go: So why are gays and straights different at all? If you believe that homosexuality is a choice, then you might assert that all men are born with the same brains. After all, men are all born with the same bodies, right? It turns out that’s not entirely true. All men are not created equal. Mother Nature has conspired to help gay men exceed straight men in one important respect: penis length. :lets_fucking_go:

I finally finished my initial pack of German made Van Der Hagen safety razors and instead of just buying another pack of one kind I got a huge multipack of many brands. Going to start with a 5 pack of Egyptian made Shark Super Stainless Blades tomorrow. The Van Der Hagens have been pretty great, long lasting (its taken me months to go through a 5 pack), and easy to use, and are easy to find in the midwest.It'll be interesting to see how they compare.

The local (national chain) coffee shop got a beer and wine license this month, and I'm interested to see what they do with it. I'd totally go over there for an evening beer if the prices are reasonable. One of my favorite coffee shops (sadly lost during 2020) did cocktails and live music in the evenings that was a lot of fun.

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@timesandseasons it just makes so much sense to use a location more than just mornings, especially if you class it up with wine / fancy cocktails / fancy mocktails / microbrews and do events like karaoke, dnd night, trivia, local music/comedy, etc. Glad you have a coffee shop trying it out in your area.

🤦 chevy bolt puts itself in park if you open the driver's door with your foot on the brake... I'm just trying to position it and can't see the front corner by sticking my head out the window. Also it automatically sets/unsets the parking brake if you park on a hill but doesn't automatically set or release it when you don't. I don't want over-the-air updates, give me source code and the ability to update the device.

"What's been happening in Gaza is an atrocity."

"You know Trump would make that situation a lot worse, right...?"

"Democrats aren't doing enough to stand up to republicans."

Neblib,
@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@beans_please @Legit_Spaghetti I disagree that Biden isn't giving due thought to our support to Israel, but to your point most people only care about the top of the ticket when electoral setup, like most things, happen at much lower levels (primaries, local party elections, state & municipal votes) that get much less turn out. You can get different voting systems locally with far less turnout, and fix the EC with a resize "only" needing a real majority / big tent in congress.

Neblib,

@ascentale a6 #hobocyclist recommends using the tubes as free tie down straps and that does work pretty well. I'm not sure on other broken cycle parts other than trash art, but metal recycles well. If serviceable there's many nonprofits that do bike builds for disadvantaged folks that would love cleaned working part donations. #bikenitea

While you can use a virtual keyboard with all the keys like Unexpected Keyboard, you can get a quick access to most commands via the search modal.
On android, there is a bar above your virtual keyboard. On the far right is a keyboard button, click that. Press the magnifying glass, commands will be there.
