“Open Source Security (OpenSSF) and OpenJS Foundations Issue Alert for Social Engineering Takeovers of Open Source Projects”

This is not surprising and I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up just being an ongoing threat to free and open source https://openssf.org/blog/2024/04/15/open-source-security-openssf-and-openjs-foundations-issue-alert-for-social-engineering-takeovers-of-open-source-projects/

From yesterday, a question for you all:

“What would you like to learn from me?”

@orta Thanks! I’m a little bit prone to bouts of distrusting my own judgement so that’s actually really helpful to me 🙂👍🏻

“What Precious Things Does The Corporate World Steal From Us? — Ludicity”

"Something I spend a lot of time reiterating is that one of the key things that you pay a large class of professionals for is their judgement"

I honestly could keep quoting from this all day. Go read it. https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/what-precious-things-does-the-corporate-world-steal-from-us/

“Linux Elitism…Again | Kev Quirk”

This simultaneously does not surprise me and disappoints me, both at the same time. Social groups that are packed full of zealots are always going to be unpleasant experiences and, if their goal is meaningful social change, inherently counter-productive https://kevquirk.com/linux-elitism-again

@bitnik Yeah, absolutely.

I'm a heavy desktop linux user myself, but I always keep around either a mac or a Windows install because there is still so much it just won't do properly. And I'm saying that as somebody who's been using desktop linux on and off for over twenty years.

@tard @bitnik CaptureOne and Affinity Photo are the two big ones for me. They’re pretty much the only reason why I occasionally tolerate Windows. The FOSS photo software scene is just not even close IMO. I used to alternate between mac and linux (linux desktop machine, mac laptop) but haven’t had the budget to update my extremely decrepit 2015 macbook pro. I also miss many of the apps made by smaller indie outfits on the mac. Even after years of Electron apps creeping their way into everything.

This is the local cat shelter here in Hveragerði. Looks like it has a new occupant, but hopefully they won’t be there for long

This, by the way, is where my sister got her cat Kolka.

The thing to do when you go out for a walk with only a funky antique lens on our camera like I did yesterday is to try and have a bit of fun with it. Like the redwings in the geothermal park here in Hveragerði in the first picture and the starlings in the second picture.

Two starlings on the same patch of grass in the geothermal park. This time the view is through a cluster of tree branches.

July last year, @baldur wrote https://softwarecrisis.dev/letters/llmentalist/ and I just found out about it from Gary Marcus' blog. Worthwhile and entertaining read. I've been saying for a while now that the IT-revolution, and especially how we humans react to it is going to teach us more about human 'intelligence' than about artificial 'intelligence'.

@gctwnl Thanks! Will have a look.

“Society of Authors survey reveals a third of translators and quarter of illustrators losing work to AI”

We all know how crap generative images are but machine translation seems to be outright declining. Google Translate now thinks “skógarþröstur” in Icelandic means “woodpecker” https://downthetubes.net/society-of-authors-survey-reveals-a-third-of-translators-and-quarter-of-illustrators-losing-work-to-ai/

@datarama Nope, you’re way way more correct. It’s a type of thrush that’s commonly found in forested areas (Icelandic names are quite often on the more literal end of the spectrum) 🙂

In English it’s called redwing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redwing

baldur,
@baldur@toot.cafe avatar

For reference, the actual translations:

These are birds:
Tjaldur = oystercatcher
Skógarþröstur = redwing
Glókollur = goldcrest
Steindepill = wheatear

This is a fish
Loðna = capelin/caplin

@melindrea Yeah, there’s been both a feature and functionality deterioration.
