Automattic WordPress.com and AI
I first saw the news from 404media that Automattic was going to start selling user content to AI companies looking for data. As with most media companies, 404 failed to make the distinction between Automattic/WordPress.com and WordPress.org the open source software.

Then I read this post about protecting user choice from Automattic which is big on
https://curtismchale.ca/2024/02/28/automattic-wordpress-com-and-ai/

@skc @curtismchale both of them?

For the record (pun intended), what is called a "post" in and is used in 's terms and conditions is what other frameworks would refer to as "objects" or "records".

"Custom post types" are "models" in the context of MVC patterns.

Blog posts and news articles are posts. Images are posts. Contact form submissions are posts. Customer purchases in are posts.

Your WooCommerce customers are user records. Their personally identifiable information is stored in the wp_user_meta table.

All of this is uploaded to Automattic's infrastructure (which is largely located in the US) as "shadow site" data if you use #Jetpack and the #GDPR implications of that are worrying to me.

Recent leaks from within #Automattic indicate that this data will not be forwarded over to OpenAI.

But Automattic's official communications about that have been clear as mud and it is pathetic that I as someone familiar with the WPCOM infrastructure and the Jetpack sync process needs to hear about it via anonymous leaks from within the company.

I'm not sure about the current backup solution offered by Jetpack, but the legacy #VaultPress backups are also not encrypted, possibly based on the 20-year-old assumption that WordPress is for blogs and all the data is therefore in public anyway.

@curtismchale The whole thing about insisting on backwards compatibility with PHP 7.0 while also ignoring currently supported PHP versions is absolutely beyond any rational thinking.

@kraft thank you! 🙇‍♀️ Can I expect something on official channels soon?

Imagine if Linus Torvalds was both the Linux release manager and the CEO of IBM.

This is the case with Matt Mullenweg, WordPress and Automattic inc.

Ok, you know the Tumblr AI opt-out setting everyone is talking about right? You see, there is something funny about how Tumblr internally works.
Every time someone reblogs one of your posts, an entire copy of the post is created in the blog that has reblogged you. That's why, for example, if you edit a post, the edits are not propagated down the reblog chain: those are, in practice, different posts with the same content than your original

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@ralfmaximus @_jv_ AFAIK, the head of AI is taking a very backhanded sledgehammer approach to getting the data over to Open AI, so what may have ended up there or what constitutes as what will is extremely unclear in general.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@_jv_ The Tumblr way of shaming others is to reblog their posts, which made content moderation difficult back in 2019, when there was an exodus of users moving their data from there to WordPress.com.

That period also overlaps with the brief time that doxxing trans people was specifically not allowed on WPCOM.

: Please. WordPress.com and the company behind it are what IBM is to Linux. It's not the same thing.

NEW: Tumblr and Wordpress are preparing to sell user data to Midjourney and OpenAI, according to internal documentation we've reviewed

@404mediaco Please don't mix up WordPress and WordPress.com. Those are two separate things. (I know MM wants to obfuscate things, but please don't fall for it.)

Wholegrain Croissants.

@thisismissem this is also horribly German. Like non-spicy arrabiata sauce.

@thisismissem I'd taste those if I could do flour actually. :)

The lack of awareness of and participation of certain causes and campaigns here in Germany is sometimes baffling.

Like in Reykjavik, some bars have changed the name of Moscow Mule to Kyiv Mule a while ago.

Asking for such an exotic drink at a rather prominent queer bar here in Berlin this weekend only lead to frustrations until I used to original name.

When everything has been said
when the problems of the world are
prioritised and dealt with
when eyes have met
and hands have been shaken
in the seriousness of the moment
— there's always some woman
who cleans the table
sweeps the floor and opens windows
to get the cigar smell out.

That does not fail.

Just found out that the wp-tests-strapon Composer package works on macOS during today's pair programming session.

The only difference is that macOS seems to use a different temp directory, but PHP handles that very well.

So that's great.

It seems like the owners of the lot next door decided to destroy the trees and bushes that have been one of the few nice things visible outside our window with our courtyard being used as a storage space for construction equipment for years.

Is this even allowed? Aren't there permits that need to be applied for here in ?

Looking at the local regs regarding the Strßenbaume, they read like "you can't not cut them but maybe sometimes not between March and September according to the BNatSchG § 39 Absatz 5 section 1 Nr. 2"
