Cristina Garcia Miro now bringing us the late start, hectic present, and promising future of radio astronomy in Spain.

Radio Astronomy in Spain started with the host-country time observations from
RIU et al. of a radio source occulted by the moon.

@carola si mal no recuerdo, sirve para la Wii U también… y no sé si para la Nintendo switch.

Quick ranking of the new iPad Pro set in terms of “ooh, this is notably better than the thing that came before”

  1. Magic Keyboard - markedly better…like really better

  2. iPad Pro - OLED is slick

  3. Pencil Pro - squeeze to bring up markup tools is cool, but basically the same otherwise so far

@matt what about the dynamic shadows? Those look helpful and neat…

juandesant,

@matt when you hover on an application using PencilKit, a shadow is digitally formed that reflects both the tool and its orientation on M4 iPad Pro… see for instance https://mastodon.social/@b3ll/112453001360323961

I think there is a lot of truth to this: before algorithms, we depended on serendipity and curation, and both meant interacting with humans. The more the algorithm got in, the less space for fun, and the more incentive to gaming the algorithms.

Today I learned that, contrary to my belief, there is Cut and Paste for files in macOS, not just Copy and Paste… and has been available since Mac OS X Lion!

There are just two steps after selecting the files to be moved, and the trick is on the second one:

  1. Press Command-C to get the source of the files
  2. Press Command-Option-V to paste the documents in the new location, and cutting them from the previous location.

See, for instance: https://osxdaily.com/2011/07/29/cut-and-paste-mac-os-x-lion/

Linux question:

In bash, I can write:
(cd .. && ls)
and it will run "ls" in the parent directory, but after the command executes I will not have CD'd. The CD is confined in the subshell in the ().

If I try this same command in the alternate shell "fish", it prints the error "command substitutions not allowed here" and nothing is executed. Is there a fish equivalent of "run this single line of commands in a rubber-room subshell whose variables and pwd do not escape"?

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@mcc is not exactly the same, but could you not do $(fish -c "cd .. ; ls ") inside of fish?

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@mcc just tested in iSH after installing fish with apk add fish:

localhost:~# fish -c "ls"
juandesant.rss
localhost:~# fish -c "echo $(fish -c ls)"
juandesant.rss
localhost:~# fish -c "$(fish -c ls)"
fish: Unknown command: juandesant.rss
fish:
juandesant.rss

juandesant.rss is the only file in that directory.

Apple has accomplished one thing with the Files app: it’s made people a lot less critical of the Finder.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci you just drag and drop…

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci you drag and drop with the option/alt key pressed if you want a copy…

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci or you drag and drop with both command and option keys pressed if you want an alias.

juandesant, (edited )
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci you could say that Windows was original in applying cut or copy and paste to files. The Mac later introduced copy and paste, never cut and paste (with the release of Mac OS X 10.7, Lion, in July 2011). The problem with cut and paste for files that is that you may end up with a cut file that is never pasted.

I’d rather have a “move selection to here” kind of UI command.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@drdrang @dustinrue @viticci yes, I did not want to go into the "this volume” versus “other volume” distinction, but you're most correct.

juandesant, (edited )
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci and just a bit short of 13 years after Lion was released, I learn that there is Command-Option-V for “Move item(s) here”.

BTW, the Finder's Edit menu can be used… but you still need to at least be pressing the Option key.

I also just found out that you can right-click (or Control-click) on the destination, and press Option to get the “Move item(s) here”.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci and I just learned that such thing exists already… since Mac OS X Lion (10.7)!
