So the good news is that the bill to exonerate the SubPostmasters gained Royal Assent last night, freeing up the fixed compensation scheme for those whose convictions are now quashed (or allowing them to apply to have their individual case assessed).

The, perhaps, not so good news, as much legal commentary has been focusing on is the (potential) precedent it sets for governments to reverse the decisions of Courts.

In this case it would seem pretty just, but in the future?

@ChrisMayLA6 this is a case that went one way with the evidence presented to the court. What I would find really missing is prosecution of those that willingly misled the courts.

The German word "Lebensmittel" means

  • groceries, food

The word "Mittelpunkt" means

  • centre

But: The word "Lebensmittelpunkt" does not mean "food point".
It can mean:

  • centre of one's life

or

  • main place of residence

Enjoy our language!

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@jensclasen If I'm not mistaken, Lebensmittel would translate directly to “means of living”. A similar construct exists in Spanish, “medio de subsistencia”. For Lebensmittlepunkt, I see Lebens acting as an adjective to Mittelpunkt, so it cannot be the point for means of living, but the life´s middle point.

Sorry to hear that the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has suffered a cyber-incident 1 that restricted access to email and certain platforms... measures put in place since the ALMA Cybersecurity incident 2 might have saved a much longer downtime!

Bingo! Or #Bing-go! #DuckDuckGo, #Neeva, #Ecosia, #Qwant and #Yahoo down? I hope a ton of people are switching to @Mojeek today. https://mojeek.com

@jackyan @Mojeek at least for DuckDuckGo the bang processing is done before, so I can escape to other search engines in the meantime…

@jackyan @Mojeek well I just tried !mojeek in DuckDuckGo and it worked…

@jackyan @Mojeek sorry, I did not realize of the autocorrect from !mojeek to !modern until I saw your reply… !modern does nothing, and it just ignores it in the search.

In UK (where I am) Facebook is going to start using my data to train its AI. I apparently "have the right" to object. And if my objection is honoured, they won't use my data any more. Honest!

juandesant, (edited )
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@brucelawson even if the UK is no longer in the EU, they copied the GDPR into their data protection law. Have they changed it recently? Because if not, they still have to ask for explicit consent for a new use of your data.

Of course, if the UK data protection officer has signaled that it will do nothing, that clears it up…

And what about Northern Ireland?

My colleague Cristina García-Miró took some pictures about my talk on Monday. I spoke mostly about the engineering and programmatic updates from the Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade, and the teams behind it. Sean’s talk today (see link) focuses on the advantages of the WSU to astronomers.

Is there a way to input accents in a Mac similar to the way Linux does it, which is more natural and requires less remembering?

The default way in a Mac is awful. But I am not here to complain, just to try to get a better solution.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@MartinEscardo my solution (not so much for accents as for special characters) is a mixture of Unicode.It (installed as a service; see link below) and the built-in macOS text replacement facility (which sinchronizes with iOS, btw).
