  1. Magic Keyboard - markedly better…like really better

  2. iPad Pro - OLED is slick

I think there is a lot of truth to this: before algorithms, we depended on serendipity and curation, and both meant interacting with humans. The more the algorithm got in, the less space for fun, and the more incentive to gaming the algorithms.

Today I learned that, contrary to my belief, there is Cut and Paste for files in macOS, not just Copy and Paste… and has been available since Mac OS X Lion!

There are just two steps after selecting the files to be moved, and the trick is on the second one:

  1. Press Command-C to get the source of the files
  2. Press Command-Option-V to paste the documents in the new location, and cutting them from the previous location.

Linux question:

In bash, I can write:
(cd .. && ls)
and it will run "ls" in the parent directory, but after the command executes I will not have CD'd. The CD is confined in the subshell in the ().

If I try this same command in the alternate shell "fish", it prints the error "command substitutions not allowed here" and nothing is executed. Is there a fish equivalent of "run this single line of commands in a rubber-room subshell whose variables and pwd do not escape"?

@mcc just tested in iSH after installing fish with apk add fish:

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci you could say that Windows was original in applying cut or copy and paste to files. The Mac later introduced copy and paste, never cut and paste (with the release of Mac OS X 10.7, Lion, in July 2011). The problem with cut and paste for files that is that you may end up with a cut file that is never pasted.

I’d rather have a “move selection to here” kind of UI command.

@dustinrue @drdrang @viticci and just a bit short of 13 years after Lion was released, I learn that there is Command-Option-V for “Move item(s) here”.

BTW, the Finder's Edit menu can be used… but you still need to at least be pressing the Option key.

I also just found out that you can right-click (or Control-click) on the destination, and press Option to get the “Move item(s) here”.

Since when does macOS have edge-snap? I just found it by chance…

I’ve tried it with QuickLook and Finder windows, even without zooming, and works the same…

16 seconds video recording of macOS Sonoma showing two overlapping windows: a Safari Window occupying around 60% of the left part of the screen, and a small notes window partially on top of it. Behind, there is a Desktop with several folders and files, and the default macOS Sonoma desktop. The cursor moves to the green button of the notes window, and (while pressing the Option key) shows a menu for making the notes window occupy 50% to the right of the Window. Then, the mouse clicks on the Safari window, and then moves to the edge. It drags the right edge to the left until the Window no longer covers it, then leaving some breathing room. Then the edge is pulled to the right, and when it arrives to the edge of the Notes window, it does not move further, while the mouse cursor does… until it suddnely moves further away to follow the mourse cursor, obscuring the Notes window. It then drags again to the left, so that the Notes window can be again seen in full, and then gives some more margin, and then tries again with the same result: the edge of the Safari window snaps to the Notes window, until the mouse drag cursor moves too much further right, and then the edge follows again the mouse cursor.
