Republicans defending Trump are acting as if his conviction this past week was sui generis. Let’s review:

Trump University
Shut down and settled fraud lawsuit for $25 million.

Trump Foundation
Shut down and assets dispersed to real charities. Trump himself ordered to pay $2 million to real charities. He also had to admit to wrongdoing in writing.

I was out of touch with the news today because I was at the new Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit at the Art Institute. Highly recommended if you’re in Chicago this summer. https://www.artic.edu/exhibitions/9539/georgia-o-keeffe-my-new-yorks

Hey, Apple, you know how storms tend to move from west to east here in the continental US? Doesn’t that suggest that the precipitation map in the Weather app should start out centered a little west of my location? That way, half the map wouldn’t be showing me what’s already passed by.

I’m not saying you should jam my location up against the right edge of the map, but maybe put me at the ¾ point?

I don’t entirely understand who Republicans are performing for. The ones who are most in the bag for Israel, no matter how genocidal Israel is, and are currently yelling about antisemitism on college campuses, do not care about antisemitism or students or Israel as a state or Jews. Many of them are either overtly or covertly antisemitic. Who is the audience?

drdrang,
@drdrang@fosstodon.org avatar

@glennf I assume there are two main parts to the audience, not mutually exclusive: antisemites who take delight in being able to call others antisemites and end-times believers whose entire support for Israel hinges on them needing it to be around for the whole antichrist/ascent into heaven thing.

Of all the people Altman could’ve tried to take advantage of, Scarlett Johansson seems like the worst possible choice. She sued Disney.

Just acquired what I believe is the oldest extant flong (paper-like printing mold used to cast metal plates) of a newspaper comic strip—or any comic strip. This is from 1912. My research has found an earlier illustration (1891, alerted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston) and plate (1896, Billy Ireland Museum at the OSU). It’s an early gag comic, just a few years after daily strips start (1903) and Sundays (1896 for sequential stories).

@glennf Have you ever explained how a paper(ish) mold survives contact with molten metal? (If it’s going to be in the book, I’ll wait until my copy arrives.)

Such moral cowards running New York University -- ordering student protestors to write phony apologies.

This is right out of the authoritarian playbook -- and it craps on every notion of freedom of expression.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/17/nyregion/nyu-protests-apology-letters.html

You don't have to agree with the protestors' politics. But you should damn well understand that America is in wave of McCarthyism right now.

drdrang,
@drdrang@fosstodon.org avatar

@dangillmor McCarthyism, yes, but also reminiscent of the forced conversion of Jews during [pick a period of history]. Once upon a time, university administrators would have enough attachment to scholarship to recognize irony when they saw it.

Apple has accomplished one thing with the Files app: it’s made people a lot less critical of the Finder.

drdrang,
@drdrang@fosstodon.org avatar

@dustinrue @viticci I don’t find the concepts of cut and paste applicable to files, but I suppose I might think differently if I had grown up using Windows.

drdrang,
@drdrang@fosstodon.org avatar

@juandesant @dustinrue @viticci The option key changes the default behavior, which depends on context. If you’re dragging to another place on the same disk, the default is move; if you’re dragging to another disk, the default is copy. I’m sure it sounds weird, but it works well in practice.

@juandesant I agree with your math but not your conclusion. IVF patients have, presumably, the same probability of success each time. So in that problem, the exponent increases with the number of trials, but the probability doesn’t. It’s (1 - p)^n, not (1 - 1/n)^n.
