Does anyone know if a copy of the infamous Ken Thompson "50 bugs" tape for 6th edition #Unix has survived? I didn't find one on the #TUHS Unix Archive, which doesn't feel promising. #retrocomputing

@elb i just learned what the “50 bugs” tape was from https://www.itreview.org/documents/2006/0616.html

Thanks for the trip!

    @rysiek @dansup yes, it does not make any sense. If they are working on a Fediverse product, the interface is well known. They should be able to discuss openly what is in the standard.

    If they want to “embrace and extend" a la Microsoft, because there are certain features that are not supported, that is a risk.

    #AskFedi Is there a general purpose front-end I can use to extract the text (and maybe images) from the pages of bullshit news sites like this that insult me with a tabula rasa when I don't let them run JavaScript in my browser?

    @maegul @atomicpoet it will be difficult to search about it, with si much literature about computing threads… but it is also how many people talk about series of toots, tweets, or other posts…

    Bunch of self-absorbed bullies disconnected from the users.

    But please, keep telling me to "contribute or stfu".

    Fuck Gs, wholeheartedly. It's one thing that no one wanted to touch that DE over a decade, (it was forked left and right for a reason).

    Not fun being "deprecated". But I guess with RH down the drain they'll remember soon about "community".

    Here's a #fediverse tip: You don't have to choose between #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, #Calckey, etc. Just like you might have had a Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook account before, you can have separate accounts on each platform. It's just that integrations between these things on the fediverse are generally easier by design.

    During the height of COVID, rental assistance, job assistance, food assistance and more were given to those in need. Student loan payments were paused. The US did not collapse due to these policies. In fact, consumer spending went up.

    So, given that these things are possible and even economically favorable, one can only conclude that ending them benefits some small but powerful portion of the populace who wants to keep the rest of us under control and in relative, if not full-on, poverty.

    juandesant,
    @juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

    @ubiquity75 well, most of the people losing jobs are not getting them back in the reinforcement part, or the data cleaning, or any other parts of the chain… for them is a displacement.

    A new Type II core-collapse Supernova SN 2023ixf was detected yesterday in the Pinwheel Galaxy (aka Messier 101, M101 and NGC 5457).
    At 21 million light-years distance and only 14.9 mag, it is too far and too faint to stand out in the night sky, unlike some other supernovae observed by humans over the past few thousand years.
    However, it is of great interest to the astrophysics community.

    Aahh … #mastodon.

    Just got blocked for telling someone “alt-text would be nice here” when they posted a picture of a sticker that was basically just text (without any alt text).

    I guess that’s easier than admitting you don’t care about #alttext (which is fine, I guess, just be open about it at least).

    Is there anything civilised I could do about this particular person?

    juandesant,
    @juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

    @maegul @torb I know one user who shall not be named who at the beginning tried to follow the practices that were imparted on them, and then it became too unbearable. They are happy now to block people… which they would not be doing if the tone/interactions were different.

    I’ve reminded this person of the need for CWs certain times, and then they have used them when they believed it was best. But it was far from my first interaction with them.

    juandesant,
    @juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

    @maegul another option that tends to work well is just tooting the descriptive text yourself, if it is something you’re interested in.
