This is just sad : Ukrainian Foreign Minister urges #EU to "accelerate russia’s defeat" by stepping up support for Ukraine
#Ukraine #Russia #UkraineWar

jeff,
jeff,

@F100 @faab64 It’s amazing how easily these people consign Ukrainians to the deprivations of their invaders. I wonder how they decide which cities — which people — to sacrifice at the altar of a false “peace.”

Ukrainians themselves overwhelmingly support fighting back against the genocidal regime that wishes to extinguish them. THEY know that not fighting now means much greater sacrifice in the years to come.

Ukrainians don’t deserve agency in their eyes.

jeff,

@F100 @faab64 …and Russians apparently don’t have agency, either, because they could turn around and head east at any point, ending the bloodshed in mere hours.

And, as we’ve seen recently, continuing the march to Moscow to seek real long-term change is feasible.

Funny how tankies don’t spend much effort beseeching Russians for peace, though. No, it’s solely the West’s fault that Ukrainians don’t roll over and die quickly enough.

Holy shit today's the Obergefell v. Hodges decision anniversary.

Two things I want to say:
1- Gay people have had the right on a national level to gay marry for... eight years. This is something worth celebrating.
HOWEVER...
2- Disabled people cannot marry freely of any gender. If you marry, your income becomes joint, and you are at risk of losing your Stipend.

Louder for the people in back:
I CANNOT marry anyone, whether I love them or not, because I WILL lose my disability stipend.

https://www.npr.org/2022/02/13/1080464176/disabled-americans-cant-marry-able-bodied-partners-without-losing-federal-benefi

:boost_ok: :no_at: if you're gonna argue with me about how the fact I can't marry is OK actually.

jeff,

@lapis Well, this doesn’t seem to be going anywhere…

  1. “If you’re in tech, you probably have more freedom than you think you have.”

  2. If I’m reading this correctly, Jessica is yet another highly-qualified tech worker who might have stayed if it weren’t for a dogmatic ‘Return To Office’ mandate. https://mastodon.social/@barrelshifter/110608971118590381

jeff,

I hope employers (not just Apple) understand what they’re losing when they insist upon such policies.

jeff,

@aaronbieber She specifically mentioned transit in the context of commuting to and from work (pre-pandemic and post-RTO), and described housing costs that in large part stem from having to be within a commutable distance to work.

Living in the Los Angeles area — pretty much ground zero for terrible traffic AND subpar public transit — I can vouch for the fact that not having to commute to and from an office each day can make all the difference.

jeff,

@aaronbieber Obviously, decent transit is a quality of life benefit for a lot of folks even if they don’t commute to work, but 1.5 to 3 hours is an awful lot of time. If that weren’t consumed (by virtue of being able to WFH) that is pretty significant. That this decision was made post-RTO isn’t surprising, IMHO.

jeff,

@cass_m She mostly mentions transit in the context of a commute to and from work, something that in her case consumed between 1.5 and 3 hours daily.

I don’t doubt that better transit would be ideal regardless, but that’s an enormous amount of one’s life to lose to sitting in a car/bus/train/shuttle — time that many employers could give back.

Living in Los Angeles, I (sadly) know this tradeoff all too well.

jeff,

@aaronbieber I understand that, but IMHO as a pragmatic matter given how much of peoples’ driving is for commuting the easiest way we can meaningfully cut into miles driven and enhance quality of life is to push back against the default “on location” office job norm.

We already have the resources to do it well, costs virtually nothing, and it’d remove a LOT of cars from the road.

Reduce cars on the road and we can return some of that space for use as dedicated bus/bike lanes.

jeff,

@aaronbieber …which I’d love, because while I work from home and live in a surprisingly walkable neighborhood (by Los Angeles area standards) I barely ride my bike due to the safety factor.

Geez. Imagine getting dumped during Pride Month.

jeff,

@marioguzman 😕

That sucks. I’m sorry, Mario.

I refer to this as “stallmanising”

Named after Richard Stallman, stallmanising is to be so obnoxious about your perfectly good and just cause, that you actively turn people against it.

Don’t stallmanise your causes.

jeff,

@guffo I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're referring to as Stallmanising, is in fact, GNU/Stallmanising, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Stallmanising…

jeff,

@marioguzman Doesn’t need to be “home” to visit!

The Steam Deck should be seen as a revolutionary device.

Imagine a Nintendo Switch which, when you dock it, turns into a full fledged desktop Linux machine.

That’s literally the Steam Deck.

jeff,

@atomicpoet I absolutely love my Steam Deck, but every time I boot into Linux I am reminded why desktop Linux for most people isn’t a thing.

For those with experience getting Feedbacks addressed and/or responded to...

If a SwiftUI bug you found in iOS 16 seems to have persisted in iOS 17, is it better to “Add More Information” to an existing Feedback, or is it better to create a completely brand new Feedback specific to the new iOS release?

Hoping to see this fixed before iOS 17 ships.

(FB12145152 for any Apple engineers who might be curious…)

#WWDC23 #iOSDev #WWDC #SwiftUI

jeff,

@curtclifton That makes sense. In the interest of saving you all time, I went the ‘Add More Info’ route for FB12145152 (though I did file a new Feedback for another ScrollView-related bug I found while I was at it: FB12448171). I hope my info and sample projects are of some help.

Thank you for your input on this, and for all you and your team do for SwiftUI. 🙂

Can someone get Caturday happening on mastodon?

I need kitties.

Here’s a photo of Molly from a couple of days ago.

Amazing that Russia was engaged in civil war and now ... is not in civil war? ... over the span of about a day.

jeff,

@danielpunkass It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

If I were Prighozin I wouldn’t feel too comfortable with the end of the standoff. I don’t see Putin taking the embarrassment of him practically waltzing unopposed to the outskirts of Moscow very well, regardless of what he said to stop it.

He has been weakened in the eyes of the Russian public. He’s going to have to reestablish dominance, somehow (and a major success in Ukraine, which would help, seems unlikely right now).

jeff,

@danielpunkass My only hope is that the Ukrainian military has found some way to capitalize on this confusion despite the short period of time it lasted.

Prighozin is just as bad as Putin, if not worse, so I didn’t really relish him taking over… but I was hoping it’d go on a bit longer so that Russia’s invasion efforts would be weakened.

This is what I love about the Fediverse.

I talk about the history of web browsers. And who shows up? @lisamelton, the person who started the Safari and WebKit projects at Apple.

So I ask her a question. And who does she refer me to? The person who led the Internet Explorer 5 team at Microsoft.

The visionOS and a MacBook Air do not pair well 😅. It was to be expected. I know it’s beta software but slow downs and using 6GB of swap is common. With other development it’s good but it’s hitting its limit. Has anyone with a Mac Studio or a high spec MacBook Pro felt like it wasn’t powerful enough for the visionOS simulator?

#visionOS

jeff,

@refactoredd @nighthawk Performance seems solid on my 13” M1 MBP w/16 GB, though it definitely eats up the battery.

(It’s a bit unstable though, but that’s not all that unusual for new platform dev tools)

Having a fan helps. It doesn’t seem especially loud to me, but this is the sort of thing that passive cooling isn’t ideal for.

I think it’s fine to wait until late in the beta to draw any conclusions re: performance.
