PhD in radio astronomy and VO; Joint ALMA Observatory Development Systems Engineer. Previously, Head of Software Product Management and Software Systems Engineer at SKAO (joined March 2014). I have worked for @iaacsic @ESO @almaobs @DataObsCL. He/him.

I try to boost only images with useful/meaningful alt-text. Might unboost after reviewing it…

I did not know iCloud Passwords existed for Windows! Is there a web equivalent in iCloud.com for Linux?

Observe this body.

For points, guess his length from the tip of his back feet to tip of his front. Inches or cm are good.

Dear @ivory, I have a draft which is a reply to a post that has been deleted. Is there a way I can get the post content (including an image with a detailed description/alt-text) to post it as a normal toot instead?

Thanks to Adobe’s licensing shenanigans today I learned about @penpot 1, an open-source design tool that you can self-host and gives you HTML+CSS+SVG code that represents your designs.

I remember having found something similar just for macOS, but I cannot remember the name now…

And looking for it I also found UXPin 2.

This is great… the Civil Registry of Chile is planning to issue passports where astronomical observatories, including ALMA, are featured!

The Joint ALMA Observatory is hiring a Systems Engineer! If you're the successful applicant, you will be collaborating with both operational and development system engineering tasks.

The alt-text of the image cointains more detail, but the full details of the application, including how to apply, can be found at https://www.comeet.com/jobs/almaobservatory/F5.001/systems-engineer--grade-15/EF.64C

Please, come and join us, or help us by forwarding this vacancy to one ore more suitable candidates!

Today is my second year anniversary since I joined the Joint ALMA Observatory as JAO Development System Engineer! Can't believe how quickly time flies… and we've done an extraordinary amount of work in these 2 years!

The cyberattack sadly also affected our newsletter archive, so I cannot point to the nice entry that they published just one month after I joined.

Just learned about Spacemacs… giving it a try, but for now it seems that — apart from having a more modern layout — it is the first native macOS emacs that can easily install org-mode et. al…

With Nicolle Wallace, Tim Miller calls Trump's and the GOP's attack on American justice "Big Lie 2.0." Yes: their continuing institutional insurrection; scorched earth for democracy.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@jeffjarvis the problem I find with that framing is that it validates the “big lie” narrative, and thus can be seen as equally bogus.

Yup, this is the issue. It's a high-trust sort of app, and it doesn't take too much to lose that trust. I just uninstalled the app myself.

Fortunately, I made a video about Hidden Bar a few months ago so I just opened that again and am back in business. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hidden-bar/id1452453066

I've also been told Ice is good (and open source) but I haven't used it yet myself. https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice

juandesant,

@matt indeed, I just uninstalled it from both my home and work computer. Funnily enough, it’s “hot” on Setapp right now… which probably means it is being uninstalled, not installed.

Or maybe there is no such thing as bad publicity? 🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s a weird one.

Bartender was sold to someone new and neither party proactively told their users.

I have Bartender installed on 2 Macs and had no idea. I double checked my email and didn’t have anything from them either 🤷🏻‍♂️

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@matt very weird indeed.

Specially problematic because Bartender records the screen to achieve its magic. Having obscure owners with access to a potential screenshot of all my activity has just made me uninstall it.

At some point in the mid 2000’s I had a certain fame in the Mac world in Spain, and because of the tooling similarities I was asked to give a talk on how to move from Mac programming to Palm OS programming.

Later in the day someone was speaking to me about the talk, and how good Juande had been, and I could not understand they were not recognizing me.

juandesant,

@glennf then I realized I had given the talk earlier with my contact lenses, while I was wearing my glasses.

I tried to give my best “Clark Kent removing his glasses” impression… and boy, was he surprised!

So Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were right: you just need glasses and a cloth change to disguise being Superman… and even more so a mere human being 😉

*no calcula

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@javisamo lo que te dice que crear formas de que gente formada pueda estar disponible para la no formada puede tener valor social y económico… pero implica compartir ambos valores. Con la “IA” el valor se lo queda el “patrón” de esa “IA”.

So the good news is that the bill to exonerate the SubPostmasters gained Royal Assent last night, freeing up the fixed compensation scheme for those whose convictions are now quashed (or allowing them to apply to have their individual case assessed).

The, perhaps, not so good news, as much legal commentary has been focusing on is the (potential) precedent it sets for governments to reverse the decisions of Courts.

In this case it would seem pretty just, but in the future?

#ruleoflaw #Horizon

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 I think this just highlights that democracy is not an end result, it needs to be workerd on continuously.

The worst thing that can happen is for people to either become complacent, or say there is nothing that we can do. When enough people do that, you live in a democracy by name only.
