The guy you replied to is also right.

Thing is, GenAI is just a method. It's a technique. It's a brush. It's way more accessible and forgiving than brushes of old (which I try as I might, fail to see as a bad thing in the grand scheme of things), but still - a brush is only as good as a person holding it. If you don't have a creative side, if you are not an artist, if you have no ideas, you will suck, and your art will ring hollow, AI or not.

Yeah, it democratized multimedia on the Web, big time. It enabled a wave of creativity, the VAST majority of which was low-effort ugly at times racist crap. It was absolutely fucking revolting.

But for a LOT of people, it was either THIS means of expression, or none at all.

In the depth of all of this cruft, though, there were culture-defining diamonds forming. And after the shitstorm went away, the diamonds stayed. And a lot of creators moved on to greater things.

And that's almost any creative technology under the Sun.

Alright, I've been thinking. As we know, the default model of conversation on the Fediverse is a tree. Threads are directed graphs, each node is allowed multiple children and only one parent. Kinda like a filesystem. There are also (hash-)tags, but they are a bit meta and work across all conversations.

What if we upgrade it a little bit? What if we allow multiple parents to each node? What if you can reply to multiple posts? I miss this feature because sometimes, when I post something, I get similar replies from different people, and I'm forced to either answer both of them (which sucks, because duplication of effort) or reply to only one and leave all others unanswered, which spawns an offshoot conversation that is basically already over. This way, conversation may feel more like putting out little fires at times. So, instead I can just add all of those in one reply, and add more as they appear.

And it's not that hard to do. Just make in-reply-to a list, not a string.

What's the point writing a standalone blog, when nobody can comment on it without registering (which nobody will)? I killed mine with the same motivation, having written for it for 5 years or so.

And there were some fucking elaborate posts in there, what a waste.

My point is standalone infrastructure being obtuse and not easily interactable without federation, there's no community.

As for "everything became social network", well... The first proper social network was Livejournal - there were friend subscriptions in there, as the prominent feature. And it was longform blogging platform, also the first one. So, always has been.

@BigFoxBoss I'm not an imbecile, I know what instant messaging is, and I remember ICQ. I had a 6-digit number.

I'm talking strictly about social blogging. Only that. Not other platforms/protocols/whatever.

Social networking/social blogging is easy to do when you're on the same website, and nigh impossible to do if you're standalone. Unless there's federation. Then it's not as easy as the same website, but suddenly - it's doable.
