This story is NUTSO. Who knew that a Canadian inventor had created working solar panels as early as 1905 – and that him being KIDNAPPED is what possibly derailed the evolution of solar tech for decades?
(I thought the story might be exaggerating that last point until I saw the kidnappers' conditions for his release... 😲)
Ursula K. LeGuin wrote, “We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable – but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art.”
It's interesting how so many quotes of her words leave out those last two sentences, which I think are the most powerful of the entire quote. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings.
And yes, art (including the written word) indeed plays a role in this resistance and change, but it cannot be the only step taken. We must push forward to resist in all avenues of life. To topple the capitalism empire for good and replace it with a society for the people and run by the people in mutual aid and library economies.
Six Flags Magic Mountain in California is building a massive canopy of solar panels over its 30-acre parking lot that will power all of the rides and offset 100% of the amusement park’s energy usage while providing shade to the cars parked beneath.
When completed, it will be California’s largest solar energy project & the world’s largest renewable energy site built by a for-profit organization.
Hello, today is #PortfolioDay. It's a good day to find people who will make mastodon a nice place, and to remind myself that one day I have to publish this western that I drew.
Time for an #introduction . We are a speculative fiction magazine that focuses on quiet stories about connection, family, relationships, comfort, and the natural world. Think slice-of-life fantasy/sci-fi with bits of #hopepunk and #solarpunk as well.
We are new, and have just opened up our first submission window. If you write short fiction that might fit in with our vibe, submit here: https://hearthstories.org/submissions.html
If you don't write, stay tuned for a December release 😄
Humble request: do you know of any real life experience of post-capitalist economies, even partial ones? Local currencies? Cooperative models? Community land trusts? Priority given to resilience over efficiency? #solarpunk economies? There are a few usual suspects (Mondragon, Cooperativa Integral Catalana, Transition Network...), but I struggle to find long lists of cases. Boost appreciated @g_kallis@jks@jasonhickel#postcapitalism#economics#degrowth#postgrowth
#Solarpunk community: please stop using AIs to generate images. Yes, I know there's very few solarpunk visual concepts. Generative AIs are predatory, anti-worker software and on top of that its energy and water consumption is huge (specially since it's a non essential service). Commission an artist, use stock images. Don't make me go fight you.
Well, beloved, it’s real. You can preorder my book “Beyond Hope” as of now. If you suspect that #MutualAid, #municipalism or the example of #Rojava suggest strategies to survive a hot, dangerous future, if you want to learn from examples ranging from the Black Panther survival programs to the solidarity clinics of Greece, or if you’re interested in a concrete working-out of #solarpunk ideas in the form of the #Lifehouse community resilience hub, this is the book for you. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyond-Hope-Collective-Mutual-Emergency/dp/1788738357
The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, Wales. #solarpunk as reality, not fiction. A lovely place, and an amazing resource. https://cat.org.uk
Alright, sent an email to the head of my local library about setting up a seed library there.
Seeds libraries are places you can go and "check out" seeds. Grow the seeds. Let one of the grown plants go to seed. Harvest the seeds. Then "return" the seeds back to the seed library!
“Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”
#scavengersreign is a rare bird, a shooting star. I was lucky enough to see it inside, work on it. Now it's re-released, let's keep this anomaly shining.
