The Etilaat Roz was once the most widely circulated newspaper in Kabul, but everything changed in August 2021 when the Taliban seized power in #Afghanistan.

Moving and important documentary about #journalism and brutal authoritarian oppression. Very reminiscent of “While we watched”, with Ravish Kumar in India. These are real heroes and I feel we have much to learn here.

Brixham, a Devon harbour town, has been struck by an illness caused by a microscopic parasite - cryptosporidium - in the water!

About 16,000 households and businesses in the Brixham area have been told by South West Water (SWW) not to use their tap water for drinking without boiling and cooling it first.

Not an expert but it does strike me as symptomatic of the state of our water companies and water system. #Water #Sewage #ukpolitics

@spytfyre do you want me to remove the #UKpolitics hashtag or add change it to “our English” water companies?

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@spytfyre 😊 Thank you! The article is really only about Devon and South West Water, no general comments at all, that was just me commenting. I do fully appreciate that using UK for things that don’t apply is Scotland is frustrating and wrong - i just can’t quite being myself to add “England” or “English”, that feels wrong, too! As your comment is there, and since I simply said “our”, I think i will just leave it. Need to have coffee, too! 😊

Using vague language about scientific facts misleads readers
https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/05/using-vague-language-about-scientific-facts-misleads-readers/
Using subjective phrasing like "scientists believe" makes facts seem like opinions.

Original research paper here

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@kim_harding yes! News articles say “scientists believe” so often, and it always annoys me. They don’t believe - they tell us what all the most recent research says!

All day long I’ve been reading reports about the “People's Graduation” that staff, students and parents at Columbia and Barnard College held after the Columbia president cancelled the official one and honestly - this is a source of joy and sustenance and hope. I just hope, hope, hope that all these current developments are the beginning of much bigger changes; that this will be remembered as a significant moment. ❤️

@aishenanigans thank you. I don’t habe time (or inclination) right now to try myself, so will just edit my original post. Would you be happy to mention/tag you in that edit?

@RubyTuesdayDONO thank you for all this. For me, it’s not so much, or not only, chatGPT and whoever puts data in there; it is really that these two answers really do reflect main stream takes - this is basically the position that Western leaders and establishments have taken; that you can find everywhere. Coming through nice and clear on ChatGPT.

Today: Our director Johan Rockström will receive the prestigious Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement "for his pioneering work on the Planetary Boundaries framework".

There will be a conversation, an award ceremony and a luncheon at Potsdam University in his honour.

It's been a privilege to work with Johan since we first met in 2009 - and since he came to PIK in 2018.

The Tyler Prize was established in 1973.

All those reading and contributing to ClimateDiary will know that questions of are central to what we are collectively trying to work through here.

This essay by Jag Bhalla, on "The Dark Origins of Optimism and its Current Cheerful Evils", is one of the best pieces I've ever read on this. Maybe the best (also many links). Enjoy.

"As Voltaire knew, optimism is often an elite-serving demon in disguise"

I loved seeing the last night, that was really special. I never thought I would see northern lights, and certainly not in Eastbourne!

In fact, one reason why they were so far south may be climate change…. Thanks to @samhainnight

Hi Kate, I asked a few climate
scientists on here. @davidho was sceptical that there are links, and @Ruth_Mottram replied very helpfully with this. So nothing against you or your science teacher, Sam (? Hope that’s correct), but for the time being it looks like maybe there isn’t a link after alll? (Still remain a non-expert on this myself).

Half thinking of starting an hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.

Won’t work of course because most of us can’t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail.

#AcademicVenting we are trying to fight draconian redundancies at Goldsmiths at a time when there is a concerted effort by government, the anti-woke brigade and others to reduce the HE sector as a whole. There are more and more articles like this one, talking about how little bits of optimism amount to a collective “cloud cuckooland”.
There is a real onslaught.

https://wonkhe.com/blogs/ofs-assessment-of-university-finances-warns-of-need-for-structural-change-to-stave-off-risks-of-provider-collapse/

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

#AcademicVenting this coincides with the UK government’s calamitous attempt to combat “net migration” by reducing the number of international students; they are no longer allowed to bring dependents (neither are care workers. The cruelty!) This is a tweet by our lovely prime minister. We have a government that is actively hostile to HE (one of the economically most important sectors in the country)

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

#AcademicVenting They tried to go one step further by abolishing the current work visa for international students (allowing int students to stay for 2 years after graduating). Luckily the Migratory Advice Committee firmly pushed back on this last week, and hopefully none of this will come to anything once Tories are out, but it’s impacting
International students decision making - we already have offer holders pulling out of our MAs.

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

#AcademicVenting Just to say again: all this is so stressful- losing 50% of your salary for a marking boycott that maybe won’t make any difference, given the wider hostile environment. It’s not even about the reality of challenges; it’s the fact that all these reports are out there, right now. It gives ammunition to those wanting to fire us, and weakens our case.
