@tilton - And every front door is accessible and targeted by every nation state and criminal org.

As soon as they stop attacking, I'm out of a job.

Exploring preparing food and canning it for local donations - but I want to do it in an official and safe manner.

The local free fridge requires either fresh produce or sealed food.

I'm wondering if I can form a non-profit, get some sort of licensure for home canning, and make prepared meals for the fridge.

Bonus points if they return the mason jars etc for reuse (wont be required though).

Anyhow. Musings for the future.

This week's crop for the community fridge / pantry.

It's a small amount, but its just the start. 1 out of every 5 plants go to the community, even on first plantings. As I scale out, this will only increase.

tinker,

On a separate note, the Bok Choy really loves the hydroponic setup!

I'd be such a good prepper influencer on TikTok/Youtube. Maybe not popular, but I'd give great advice.

Every video would just be a reminder to wear a fucking respirator and learn new skills.

Maybe we won't survive with my strategy, but I bet it will work better than hoarding bullets and food.

tinker,

@davep @NilaJones @sleepfreeparent @PacificNic @tinker - The things I'm doing have some overlap into "prepper" spaces, but there are a couple key differences.

One, there is a massive emphasis on community and mutual aid. Whenever I plant veggies or raise animals, 20% goes to the local community, for example. Seeds are shared freely through the local seed library. We all go in on bulk orders on supplies so everyone saves, etc.

Also, while what we do absolutely prepares for disasters, we are currently doing it now to supplement (and ultimately replace reliance upon) capitalism. So free food, free water, free tools, free education, etc.

No need to wait for disaster and prep for it. We can make our lives better right now.

tinker,

@sleepfreeparent - So I started with the local library and the community gardens. You might also look into local food pantries and similar as well.

The library is the best place to start. They have a lot of groups that will use their space, so you can get a feel for what is already built.

Pick an area you want to dive into. I picked food. But you can pick education, power generation, housing, really whatever. Then find the people that ARE ALREADY DOING the work and learn from them.

It's rare that you'll have to reinvent the wheel or build something from scratch.

From there you'll be able to see where you can contribute. Do you help projects that are already going? Do you start something that intersects with a couple of projects, finding efficiencies in connecting multiple groups? Etc., et al.

You'll probably find that community and mutual resiliency already exists around you, you just need to join them and make them stronger.

Let me know if you need any help finding groups, I can look around your area with you. Let me know if you have any questions as to what projects exist. Tell me what you're interested in and I can try and point out things that might align with your goals, expertise, and/or dopamine zones :P

Old blogpost bamp:

#BlueSky is cosplaying decentralization
https://rys.io/en/167.html

> BlueSky’s decentralization is a similar kind as with cryptocurrencies: sure, you can run your own node, but that does not give you basically any meaningful agency in the system.

> “Neutrality” and “speech” and “voice” and “protection from bans” is mentioned right there, front and center, in BlueSky’s overview and FAQ. At the same time moderation and anti-harassment features are, at best, an afterthought.

tinker,

@rysiek - BlueSky is decentralizing the costs of running the business and centralizing the profits.

@JAGLees @valkyrie - So. What do you call the margin between the intrinsic value and the inflated value?

    tinker,

@kindcat @tinker @JAGLees @valkyrie - Bitcoin can be used to purchase goods and services. But who cares.

Stating that a house has intrinsic value does not contribute to the conversation. It does not address the issue.

The issue is that housing is speculated on driving the price well beyond market norms of its intrinsic value.

Heck, instead of using the point that it has intrinsic value to negate or derail the point, it actually proves the point. Housing is the new bitcoin specifically BECAUSE the cost is not tied to any intrinsic value. Its divorce from that value is what makes it speculative.

OH: "The cheese monger was a weird man."

What... what conversation did I walk in on?!

Thinking of starting your own business? Of starting your own consultancy?

Tired of being exploited and want to exploit others? Finally get ahead in this rat race?

Instead, create a co-op and spread the profits around. You'll maintain your employees better, everyone benefits, and we start to end this cycle of exploit or be exploited.

Remember when COVID happened and many workers died?

Remember when the workers that remained started demanding better pay and conditions?

Remember when workers, even unorganized workers, had the leverage?

Remember when there were more jobs than workers? (No one wants to work anymore! 😭)

None of that has changed. We're still there.

Remember when business leaders said they had to fire people & squeeze them & take losses in order to gain back the upper hand?

    That's what this is.

    tinker,

    @EVDHmn - Form co-ops. Absolutely.

    tinker,

For reference on the "Remember when business leaders said they had to fire people & squeeze them & take losses in order to gain back the upper hand?" statement, please see the below video clip where they come outright and say it.

Hello everyone. I know that these are tough times for many people. If you derive value from the fediverse and have the means to do so, please consider donating to support your instance. Most instances rely on donations to pay the bills (infosec.exchange and friends cost over $3000/month to host).

Instructions on how to donate are generally available on your instance's "about" page (for example: https://infosec.exchange/about)

Also, I firmly believe that access to the fediverse should not be tied to one's ability to pay, and I think it's even more important for those in difficult situations to maintain the social connections that the fediverse provides, so (at least in my view) donations are welcome, but not required in any way.

And for those people who already donate, my hats off to you. You make the fediverse possible. :blobheartcat:

    tinker,

@jerry @grey @vpz - And that doesn't include your time, effort, and skill.

As someone new to the #solarpunk genre, I'm wondering if someone would be interested in reading a ~3000-3500 word short story that is solarpunk x my own contemporary fantasy/rural fantasy world of Musimagium

Just curious if I was close to the mark with this. I was going to submit it to an anthology, but decided against it.

My goal is to have it finished by the end of the month.

Putting in a sample order via Alibaba for some grow lights.

If it works out, will be putting in a bulk order for local friends and community. We all pitch in an get only what we need. But because we buy in bulk together, we don't have to pay for someone else's middleman profits.

These grow lights go for $10 per unit on Amazon. I'm getting them for $3 per unit wholesale (that's total costs with shipping, credit card fee, tax, etc). I think they're the exact same thing. Like... I'm buying directly from the manufacturer and not through a drop shipper / middleman.

I guess this is how co-ops start.

    #solarpunk #mutualAid

    tinker,

@Rajiv - I use these 3 ft LEDs for my grow shelves:

    https://www.amazon.com/Monios-L-Spectrum-Replacement-Integrated-Hydroponics/dp/B09VB1RGD7/

they come in 2 ft as well.

    tinker,

@davep - So these are underpowered. I need to use two for a single plant. Amazon has a larger one that is good, but i havent found a wholesaler for it yet.

    tinker,

@davep - for strips they look great! I havent found stronger halo lights though

    tinker,

@outofcontrol - Yeah, doing a quality control sample buy right now.

That said, I've bought so many lemons from Amazon that just buying from them is not enough assurance.

    tinker,

    @davep - Oh absolutely!

    tinker,

@LibertyLizard - I think it was a bit the other way round. Solarpunk started as an idea. Just the "I'm tired of dystopian scifi. I want utopias that address pragmatic concerns and show us a way out of this current situation."

Then folks started to collate ideas on how to make that work and found that various anarchic philosophies already addressed it.
