The FCC is accepting applications for new, low-power, community radio stations the first week of November.
This is huge, you guys, this window rarely opens (the last time was 2013), and as you know, KUZU shows one way LPFM can be a foundation to build valuable community information resources.
The Grassroots Radio folks are holding a conference in West Virginia to help folks out with this.
Addendum: By "nobody is pushing hate speech," I mean that no company, owner of the Social Network, can deliberately and aggressively force posts with hate speech onto users solely for the purpose of selling more ads. This does not imply that there is no hate speech - unfortunately, this is a problem that also spreads in the Fediverse, and the tools are not always adequate.
TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬
Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.
“It’s not too late. It’s not fine. It’s exactly the time to demand a better world.”
Love this by @ClimateAdam and Rosemary Mosco (Bird and Moon Comics).
The news and our anxiety about it can seem devastating and overwhelming - but there's more to the story. The action we take now will and is making a difference, and, at the same time, much more needs to be done, by more people to make the difference that's needed.
And you don’t have to do it on your own, find or start a local Transition group and together reshape your community to be more resilient, fairer and thrive for the future.
Get ready for the New Year's Day 24 Global Stream Parade! from your fedi adjacent alt streaming and broadcasting friends.
We have 24+ hours of amazing special content lined up kicking off at 0100 UTC Jan 1st.
It's a massive distributed parade of party, anti-party, laugh, learn, riot, share, entertain, comfy and more hangouts in the spirit of #JoinIn, #SitTogether and celebrating #community.
Here is where we will keep the parade route (schedule):
Then I began tooting my #music and a ton of #puns#jokes, and #memes. And you all responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I very quickly was made to feel at home.
My deepest gratitude goes out to the #Mastodon community, a #community that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. It’s unlike any other “social media platform” here.
Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of five thousand followers, and I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.
Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.
Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts on it with me, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. This has been amazing.
But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here is one of wonderful acceptance, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.
Wow! 16 pro-amateur astrophotographers imaged the Whirlpool Galaxy, then combined their data to produce an image with 255 hours integration time. This is the result.
I absolutely love hearing about amateur and pro-am communities collaborating and working together to really highlight the contributions they can make to science.
These communities are pretty much self-funded but can deliver lots!
I have been joking to a couple of friends today who were also redditors that I've been feeling withdrawals from reddit throughout the day. Like I knew I was addicted, I just never thought I was going to have to face the consequences of withdrawals!...
Any software developers in my reach currently unemployed? I am, and while I’m working on a few side projects, I miss not having a team to bounce ideas and random dev chit-chat on a daily basis.
Anyone feeling the same or open to have some informal group chat? Or know a small community I could join?
Hi this is #radioFreeFedi . Your 24/7 #community supported #radio service. We celebrate discovery, consent, attribution, direct artist support, collaboration and community!
We have 3 eclectic, comfy and rotating theme channels, a video simulcast/chat hangout and more.

If you have music/voice/words/time to share or know some artists you might send our way. Rad!
Out of 666 episodes from popular #Python#podcasts with invited guests, women appeared in only 117 (17.56%) episodes.
This inspired us to start a new podcast series highlighting women and underrepresented group in the Python #community
6 more days to get your #sylius#elephpant, please have a look, because it is a "all or nothing" kickstarter, so if we don't find a few more adopter, the single sylius elephpant will stay alone!
Exciting news! The Ubuntu Community is now on Matrix. As of today, we're now fully federated with the rest of "The Matrix"! Anyone can join the party 🎉
Did you know that you can also find the Ubuntu HPC community on Matrix? We're an active group supercomputing professionals that meet every Wednesday over Jitsi. Just look for hpc:ubuntu.com when exploring rooms.
Hope to see you there with the rest of the Ubuntu Community 😎
OC Any other former redditors feeling grief?
I have been joking to a couple of friends today who were also redditors that I've been feeling withdrawals from reddit throughout the day. Like I knew I was addicted, I just never thought I was going to have to face the consequences of withdrawals!...
