Can anyone decently explain to me why people are so fixated on assigning a gender to someone?

Why is that important?

You wanna address them? "Hey [whatever the person told you they want to be called]"

You weren't told how to address them? "Excuse me: I'm Andreas, What's your name?"

They don't tell you? Have you considered that they probably don't want to talk to you?

And if it is important (Leave that decission to the person in question): Have you considered ... asking?

They still don't tell you? Seems they don't think it is important. Perhaps you should talk to your Marketing department and tell them that it is none of their business what gender someone is!

@sarah the thing in question was not about pronouns but gender...

And - please correct me when I'm wrong - I always considered them to not necessarily have to "overlap"...

And most of the time the gener is only "relevant" for marketing departments so they now what things to try to sell you. Which is rude!

@sarah And for example "Andrea" is usually considered male in italy while female in germany. So context matters. I consider trying to guess the gender or pronouns from a name a bad habit...

@sarah That is one of the things that I would never implement when asked for it. I rather quit than work for a company where Marketing is more important than the right to not have to reveal my gender!

There were some attempts in the past but internals was ... how do I put that politely ... showing that it needed one while telling everyone that it didn't need one?

For the non-locals: Frankfurt Airport is not even on the route from Frankfurt to Verona....
