So I'll visit my family briefly tomorrow. And I decided to take the car instead of public transport. But after checking options and it came out to 3 hours there and back instead of 7 and having to take the car anyhow for the first 10km at least ...

Oh! Did I mention leaving home at 6 instead of 8 in the morning?

🤷

@brunty How is that even a question?????

why would anyone want to wear the left one when there is the right one available?????

heiglandreas,

@brunty where'd you get it?

Good news! .zip and .mov are now TLDs, not just file extensions! So mentioning archive.zip in chat may now link to a phishing site or something.

Wait no, that's bad news...

heiglandreas,

@varx /me heads off to register final.zip and really_final.zip....

Perhaps add some subdomains?

User-repairable headphones sounds like a solution in search of a problem. It just makes me think the headphones are poor quality than it’s a selling point that I can fix them myself.

This is an example of a product whose core feature is actually anti-marketing for the product.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/fairphones-user-repairable-headphones-will-offer-spare-parts-through-its-app/

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@carnage4life So a warranty on a product is also nonsense as that implies that the product might be faulty...

Advertising that you can easily repair something means that what was the default in past days iy now an added benefit...

It's not about user-repairable. It's about repairable at all. And not "send it in and we'll charge you a shitload if money to send you a new device"

dragonmantank, to random

Hot take: PHP doesn’t have an async or concurrency problem, people just think it does because devs are brainwashed to “async everything.”

Scaling out via FPM pools or even just more httpd threads with mod_php works fine for most applications. Once PHP is the actual bottleneck for your application, then you worry about async/concurrency.

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@dragonmantank Premature optimization....

I'm working on a talk and I'm in this weird place where it's basically Schrödingers talk for me: Nobody has seen it yet, so it could be great or aweful - I've lost all feeling for that at the moment.

Do other know this feeling?! Like: "Hey this is really good... or absolutly rubbish, could go both ways 🤷‍♀️"

@mirjam_diala Absolutely yes.

Friend-o's: Is there a nice task tracking app that allows you to set up a rota of tasks on specific days of the week that repeats? Not like a habit tracker as tasks are done on specific days, not every day.

Like:

Monday:

  • Meal planning
  • Vacuuming

Tuesday:

  • Shopping
  • Mopping

Weds -> Sunday etc etc and then the same list is repeated the following week

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@brunty I immediately have a weekly BuJo list in my mind...

Me: Replies to email inline
Them: Try to reply to my email inline as well ... using Microsoft Outlook....

No citation indentation, signature before content of email, in essence on first sight an email consisting of "Dear Mr. Heigl - Kind regards"

Required a phone call to realize that they replied inline - underneath the signature (where the papertrail starts).

Thank you Microsoft for killing email

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@aishasie

Yeah... "As per my replies in red"...
Which get's pretty useless in a plain-text email 🙈

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@aishasie I still try to adhere to RFC 1855 (Which IIRC hasn't been obsoleted...)

" - Be brief without being overly terse. When replying to a message, include enough original material to be understood but no more. It is extremely bad form to simply reply to a message by including all the previous message: edit out all the irrelevant material."

But as Outlook et al have decided to ignore all of that we are sending tons of useless data around 🤷

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@aishasie Spam might be the most email amount in terms of data. But I'm sure it's shortly followed by legit company email with useless papertrails. Not to forget unnecessary
and unnecessarily large attachments 🙈

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@aishasie And just to make that point clear: I am not blaming any user for not following the netiquette!

But I do blame those responsible for creating fucked up email-clients! Yes! That includes also those developing Web-based clients!

If you're going to submit a talk, make sure you submit your bio. Someone just submitted a talk and then said for bio: 'yeah its on linked in, ive given a bunch of talks'.

Dont. Make. The. CFP. Reviewers. Do. Extra. Work.

You should always write a bio, and when doing so it should include why you're the person to be talking about this topic and why you're the expert.

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@mainframed767 I've always seen the content of the Bio field in a CFP as the stuff that gets printed in the (virtual?) conference-booklet. The stuff I write there is what attendees will see to decide whether they want to know what I might have to say.

Telling the attendees to "go look at LinkedIn, I've given a bunch of talks" is ....

How do I put that politely....

A punch in the face! I know for sure whom I do not want to listen to!

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@mainframed767 Though as someone that might want to speak at the same conference: Please go ahead and provide such a Bio! It's the best you can do... to increase my chances of being selected instead of you... 😁

Schrank, to random German
@Schrank@phpc.social avatar

People answering support emails. Do you like it, if a customer replies to the last email with a "thank you" or are you annoyed, the damn ticket got open again? 😅

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@Schrank When I open a support request then logically I am the only one able to close it!

Closing a support ticket with a "Thank you!" is a nice way to show that they have helped me and that I appreciate their help.

Closing without a "Thank you" means in essence "I understand that you can not help me here but I do not really like the outcome"

I've had a week off where I spent time hanging out with my wife and dog, in a hot tub, with walks on the beach, going out for dinner, seeing friends etc

Even as someone who likes their job, I'm back at work today and I'm a bit meh about it

Also it's grey and raining which isn't helping

Top tip: When you sign up for anything online, put the website name as your middle name. That way when you receive spam emails you will know who sold your info.

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@MarkHoltom or add "+website" to you email-address (most email providers support that, but test first).

So you're registering on coolWebsite.com with the email me@example.com?

Use me+coolWebsite@example.com instead.

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@timwolla From what I've encountered so far most spammers don't care. Email will be delivered regardless - And as not all email-servers understand the subaddressing they might actually invalidate addresses by removing the '+'.

But yes: That is a concern!

Avoidable by using a catchall in your own email-domain... Which might get difficult with for example gmail or such things... 😁

/cc @MarkHoltom

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar
