Do I know anyone who speaks Romanian? I have what I think is my grandfather’s war-time documents (he was forced to join the German army during WW2) that he used as a messenger? I would love to find out what it says inside

Both - my wife and I buy whole roasted beans, have an electric burr grinder, and do morning pour-over coffee in a Chemex and the occasional cappuccino with a moka pot. Tea in the afternoons and decaf or herbal stuff during the cold weather evenings.

I have experimented with Emacs but muscle memory for Vim keybindings and being used to a modal editor makes the cost of switching high. https://mastodon.social/@hwpplayer1/112575452826519389

I have been finding I enjoy the meetings I have with other developers who are at the same level as I am — it allows me to see what other teams are doing and see if they have solutions to problems I come across because it does help if the org as a whole decides on the same approaches.

I am starting to believe that a lot of tech companies think the product they make is their stock.

Car key fobs should be extremely difficult to activate in one’s pocket and arguably remote start should be the only thing that functions beyond like 10 feet. Or the dang things should be configurable.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@jmichaelward So I am gonna be That Guy and point out that this is not a tech issue but a process issue. Setting aside that it was a key fob, whenever you change the battery on a remote don’t you immediately verify that it’s working correctly?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@jmichaelward I am in agreement that what happened to you sucks. My own process for when I change the battery for my key fob is to go out to my vehicle and verify every button works as expected. Is it annoying to do it? It absolutely is even though it is a 30 second walk to my garage.

@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

First of many to come but MLB banned a #baseball player for making hundreds of bets on baseball games while on the injured list.

In every single MLB clubhouse there is a sign that outlines the punishments for betting on baseball games — lifetime bans. That is why Pete Rose will never get in.

I wonder if I could get rid of my beard and just have a moustache without looking like a white supremecist?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@Daddaniele For a little bit in the early 2000’s I had what I called a “palm tree” — moustache and then thin strip down the middle of my chin

If people are not going to the movies anymore I have a crazy idea, hear me out, what if studios start doing small, well thought-out romantic comedies and dramas instead of the 300 million dollar CGI shit fest we have been getting during the last decade?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @ramsey You are giving them too much credit. They are just copying what worked before because they have no concept of a future for their industry.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @ramsey No, it actually a lot more complicated than that. Check out this video https://youtu.be/m9AvT6mS0xE?si=dgfh3IQa5JFpI75_ — it is about Magic The Gathering content but touches on this issue in film.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 You never know what might be relevant from a meeting. I’m here to work too and those meetings are opportunities to find out what other folks are working on. Maybe it will impact you later. Shit-posting about meetings is fun too
