A UI bugbear of mine is stuff like this.

Accept the input and regex the letters away!

Same thing when phone numbers aren't accepted with hyphens, or financial numbers aren't allowed to contain commas

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@ciaran Careful with the commas though. My bank, which I use in English, uses commas as thousand separators. Invoices I receive in French use commas for decimals. This can lead to errors when copy-pasting. Agreed of the other stuff.

Vendor Security: why I've mostly given up on the practice of forcing vendors to regnerate insecurely-transmitted credentials

@sean Wow. Kafkaesque is the right word. It's hard to not come across as patronizing in these nonsensical situations.

@phpday travel-curse is hitting hard. DB managed to get 40 minutes delay between Frankfurt Main Station and Frankfurt Airport.

For the non-locals: Frankfurt Airport is not even on the route from Frankfurt to Verona....

😂

Luckily I have plenty of time planned in. Looks like that was a good idea...

My 12-yr-old figured out how to bypass the parental controls on #DisneyPlus.

He couldn't find the movie Wish on the kids' profile... so he created a new profile. Which doesn't prompt for password or pin & gives you access to all the content. 😬

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@syntaxseed My two cents: I let my kids use regular profiles on apps, while educating them on how to choose appropriate content, while also keeping an eye on what they're watching. I found that to be more effective and less frustrating for everyone.

@Skoop Sounds like a huge security issue. What other private information ends up in which unrelated accounts?

Fellow Mastodonians ...

Do any of you do video editing ... perhaps for a podcast or maybe personal home videos? If so, what is the best, most easily used video editing software out there?

I don't need all the bells & whistles, but will need features like splicing video segments (from diff't sources) together, some nice (not over the top) transitions, ease of use, & good quality end results.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

afilina,

@carolynporco I had a good experience using Camtasia for my online tutorials.

urgh, knee deep in Traits, *Aware interfaces, and Abstract classes.

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@dantleech I hate the *Aware stuff with a passion, and I think I can feel your pain. The last time I used traits, I shot myself in the foot.

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@dantleech @alessandrolai @maxalmonte14 I feel like most of these are solutions to treat the symptoms of inheritance. No inheritance, no problem.

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@alessandrolai @dantleech @maxalmonte14 Only to replace inheritance with implements TimestampAware :P

sarah, to php
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

I strongly prefer composition over inheritance.

If you can compose objects of other objects and use interfaces over concretions, you make it much easier to modify your app in future.

Ultimately the time you take to design your app will be spent now (in design) or later (in maintenance). Since most apps spend most of their life in maintenance, don’t make the mistake of saving time now and spending it later.

afilina,
@afilina@phpc.social avatar

@sarah I don't think I used inheritance anywhere other than PHPUnit's TestCase in the last few years. I wish we could have a way to write tests without extending.

What’s up with 19.2 fl oz beer cans? I mean, I like the size, but it’s not an even amount of anything. It equates to 567.81 ml.

Yes, I know American units are wonky, but sometimes they’re weird because they actually equal to an even metric number. For example, they sell 16.9 fl oz water bottles because that’s a half liter.

So, what gives on the 19.2 fl oz / 567.81 ml measurement for these tall cans?

afilina,

@derickr @ghorwood @heiglandreas @ramsey That was an enjoyable read, thank you.
