Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

Updating LinkedIn to reflect that I built a substantial portion of Redis (a proprietary fork of Valkey).

"...but you didn't?"

I don't see why that matters any. If Redis-the-company can claim it, so can I.

@sandofsky This is as much an AI issue as it is about Facebook just not fixing these engagement hacks. It used to be shitty meme pages, now its generative AI.

Yet another annoyance that follows us around the web: “Sign in with Google”

You can disable these prompts, but Google buried the option:

Manage your Google Account ⇢ Security ⇢ You connections to third-party apps & services (“See all connections”) ⇢ Settings (gear icon) ⇢ Google Account sign-in prompts: OFF

chkuendig,
@chkuendig@ioc.exchange avatar

@andrewe much easier to just kill it with ublock origin…

chkuendig,
@chkuendig@ioc.exchange avatar

@andrewe yeah, just wanted to point out that by making the setting so difficult to find many people will probably hide it in ways google probably likes even less than disabling it in the setting.

In light of the xz debacle, I'd like to note that the maintainer of ninja expressed interest in stepping down but hasn't found a candidate:

chkuendig,
@chkuendig@ioc.exchange avatar

@evmar That discussion has multiple candidates that are willing to jump in and could possible do it as part of their existing dayjob? Sounds like quite a fortunate situation compared to most other projects or am I missing something that happened since June 2022?

Apple's perhaps not totally out of touch with their dug-in positions around App Store policies in the face of immense regulatory pressure. They need the Services revenue to keep growing. It's the only meaningful element of the business that still is... https://spyglass.org/apple-antitrust-fight/

chkuendig, (edited )
@chkuendig@ioc.exchange avatar

@mgs On the most fundamental level this is about the regulators trying to find reasonable rules to prevent rent extraction of monopolies (because they cant directly take the money and redistribute it to suppliers, partners and customers they have to find rules that either prevent rent extraction or promote competition) and Apple trying to comply with said rules but still get the profits the rules try to take away. It’s obv. why Apple is fighting this tooth and nail, but in the end they probably can only delay the inevitable.

The iPod server was a powerful first iteration music sharing device. While not designed for convenience, its internal RAID can still be expanded with modern compact flash cards for 1.25TB of on-the-go storage.

The three million toothbrush botnet story isn’t true.

Here’s the original source of the story: https://archive.is/2024.01.30-203406/https://www.luzernerzeitung.ch/wirtschaft/kriminalitaet-die-zahnbuersten-greifen-an-das-sind-die-aktuellen-cybergefahren-und-so-koennen-sie-sich-schuetzen-ld.2569480

It’s simply a made up example. It doesn’t exist. It starts talking about NoName Ddosia, too, which also isn’t toothbrushes.

What a weird story, something just doesn't add up. The only toothbrush I found that has any sort of WiFi technology is a $400 Oral-B model. So 3M people bought this thing and actually connected it to WiFi? Just doesn't sound plausible.

chkuendig,
@chkuendig@ioc.exchange avatar

@paul Its a shame Fortinet is getting away pinning this on the media and translation mistakes despite two of their local exec having authorized quotes that a) make it explicit this wasnt a hypothetical b) say there was a customer name they couldnt disclose and c) specify this was a 4h outage with 1M+ damages. Clearly thats not a mistranslation but their own local team lying and spreading fake horror stories....
