I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

There'll be an breakout session during OW2con'24 for NGI beneficiaries. It's a chance to meet up with fellow contributors to the open internet, share a presentation about your project and to explore new collaboration possibilities.

Throughout the conference there'll be an NGI Community corner for projects to provide demos & meet open source professionals

OW2con'24 is held 11-12, June in Paris-Châtillon. Registration is free but mandatory.

@dentangle @NGIZero I'm honestly disappointed that this isn't the first NGI EU event that doesn't have an explicit while this may be a new thing for industries like banking, we have no excuse in Tech for that. There was an NGI event earlier this year and I checked. No code of conduct, let alone a health policy.

We need to do better otherwise you won't really have a diverse community attending.

Due to the amount of days I’ve accrued in my leave balance, I officially was able to put in my two weeks’ notice with the United States Air Force today.

This is a weird time for me. I’m figuring out what my future looks like, and planning on going back to school full-time. Part of me is really happy, another part of me is sad, worried, terrified, burnt out, and depressed.

I had some amazing experiences, and met some incredible people. We made memories together. Walking away from that puts me in a really weird spot. I have to take time to figure my shit out.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@deadsuperhero you are older now.

You will get so much more out of the experience. You've already lived life, so there will be less stress about the potential of screwing it up.

You also have the support of your wife.

Higher Education is a different experience when you are contemporary with the lecturers.

I remember the older students I knew did, they weren't afraid to ask for support and get the best learning experience they could.

Ok, Cory Doctorow is pissing me off now, lol.

"Break down the steps of training a model and it quickly becomes apparent why it's technically wrong to call this a copyright infringement. First, the act of making transient copies of works – even billions of works – is unequivocally fair use. Unless you think search engines and the Internet Archive shouldn't exist, then you should support scraping at scale."

We need some kind of term for arguing via false equivalence.

Jeremy Hunt takes bets? Does anyone remember a company called ARM?

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sellathechemist ah yes the same old question, why don't we have a British big tech firm?

Tech firm gets acquired by American Firm as founders look for an exit to clear debts from a lack of support, or a loan rather than a grant.

BBC: No one will ever know...

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sellathechemist somehow I don't see the UK Government creating a series of funds like @EC_NGI or like @NGIZero in particular.

They want massive unicorns, rather than consider small to medium funding grants for digital innovation in projects etc.

Let alone investment in digital sovereignity via supporting and using these projects.

Hm, so because I am so eager to understand things I know have the task to explain of tomorrow.

From what I understand, I can think of multicast of like topics in MQTT:
One sender and whoever is interested can read from it. New hosts are subscribed to it when they go online.

By setting certain flags in their are messages for routers and neighbors. One for request and a matching respond (called solicitation and advertisement).

Now I would love to have a confirm my understanding.

Because the teacher's explanation: 🤷

onepict,

@andre you want to ask @dentangle as he's been working with multicast as he founded @librecast .

There's a massive elephant in the room when it comes to . How do you recruit folks to help with building?

Just why is your community pipeline limited? Could it per chance be your public behaviour as the BDFL?

I mean you realise your community is more than just the code right?

http://onepict.com/20240512-elephant.html

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@z428 It really does. I do appreciate the strain that maintainers are going through.

They do need the support. But they do need to be open to considering what extra support they may need.

Including listening to their folks who may hint that they are being a bit of an asshole.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@Life_is @theresnotime @brooke @Raymond

We have institutional memory though. How our peers act in other FOSS projects that we may be involved in can make that sort of behavior seem acceptable.

To me this is more, how do we foster community, rather than I want to dictate your conversation. I don't.

Its more I'd like a bit more empathy before the reply.

I mention the BDFL as that happened to be in the examples in the post I wrote. But we are all ambassadors for our communities.

Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey caused a minor social media ripple last week when he left the Bluesky board… a project he founded and initially funded in his Twitter days. He’s now given a (slightly confused) interview explaining why.

He tells the interviewer he wants social media curation-algorithm choice (me too!). But he’s left the one major platform (Bluesky) which provides it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He left because Bluesky is providing moderation tools some users wanted. And it’s too focused on the (slick, Twitter-like) app layer. But how else do you get the critical mass of users to make the underlying protocol worth connecting to? There were endless complaints from non-nerds that Mastodon/the Fediverse was just too complicated for non-techies to understand and use.

He thinks the Bluesky Public Benefit Corporation is too slick a business. How else do you attract continued funding, without relying on flaky billionaires? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also: he’s a wannabe cypherpunk, who I don’t think has learnt much from that movement’s experiences with “freedom technologies” in the 90s/00s 😵‍💫

He also has many confused thoughts about X/Twitter since he left (it’s all good, apparently.) I’m not sure he’s much of a loss to Bluesky.

@tanepiper @ian That struck me as well.

Lotta tech bros seem not to get the idea of freedom of association.

Sometimes there's a part of me that really feels the need to hit them on the nose with a rolled up copy of the universal declaration of human rights.

"Freedom of Technology" my arse!

@stefano I came upon it after noting the recent discussions between Linus Torvalds and Kees Cook .

It's nice that there's not much swearing now. But I think Linus perhaps needs to reflect on some of his behavior. It's still toxic.

Linus demonstrating that any clear and well-reasoned proposal can still be attacked using nothing more than SHOUTY CAPS and calling it "idiotic".

Deftly ignoring direct questions, and side-stepping all attempts at logical discussion by deliberately and repeatedly mis-quoting the other person.

@kees I am in awe of your patience and calm 😉

Looking at archived #multicast projects from the 1990s. I feel a little sad.

All these projects with different distributed use cases for multicast.

It's not just for streaming.

I wish some of the folks who worked on these projects were on the fediverse.

#librecast wants to bring back multicast. We want to do more with it.

At it's heart multicast is networking with consent. From the very fact it is pub/sub

@vfrmedia @randahl Well, when you have a society where as a man you're expected to not really express your difficulties in a cult of a "strong man", this is what happens.

You become toxic to show how strong you are. Or toxic when you feel weak and ashamed so you need to beat someone else up.

I want him to be able to say when he stands in the House and presents the #e4769 petition for an official Fediverse server that he himself is the first Canadian MP to be on the Fediverse!

Boost for yes! I am going to show him this post! I'm counting on you, literally! 🔥 🙏 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 🙏
