I'm Arnold Schrijver (he/him). Social coder. #FOSS, #HumaneTech and #SocialWeb advocate.

I help foster #Solutions that improve #Wellbeing, #Freedom and #Society

Let's #ReimagineSocial and envision a #Peopleverse where archipelagos, built by the #Commons, unfold the #HumanWeb. Delightful Realms of Creation, where only our dreams may hold us back.

Make a game with Hoot for the yearly #Lisp #GameJam!

https://spritely.institute/news/make-a-game-with-hoot-for-the-lisp-game-jam.html

The #game jam co-organized by Dave Thompson, CTO at @spritelyinst, starts today and are an excellent opportunity to test-drive the #Spritely #Hoot project's #Guile to #WebAssembly facilities.

Get inspired by last year's jam, and join the 10-day event..

Feeling especially nostalgic for the '90s right now.

Everything seemed better back then. The way it was supposed to be.

Maybe it's just looking back at being a child which feels this way?

@anji no smartphones. We didn't know how lucky we were.

#Mastodon.. a "mutuals only" communication mode?

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@shlee it is less big than followers only, or public.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@shlee it is people who follow you. So, I agree with you that is too wide of an information spout.

Following only would be a good restriction, but mutuals only is where I'd say that "personal social networking" truly starts.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@shlee

Interesting would be 'topical follows'..

"I follow you wrt shared interest on #cooking and not interested on your technical rants about #FOSS". And then you get topical mutuals that way too.

May get to be a bit complex to achieve #UX-wise, but still.

Due to the amount of days I’ve accrued in my leave balance, I officially was able to put in my two weeks’ notice with the United States Air Force today.

This is a weird time for me. I’m figuring out what my future looks like, and planning on going back to school full-time. Part of me is really happy, another part of me is sad, worried, terrified, burnt out, and depressed.

I had some amazing experiences, and met some incredible people. We made memories together. Walking away from that puts me in a really weird spot. I have to take time to figure my shit out.

smallcircles,

@deadsuperhero

You can do it, Sean. Go for it 💕

Is there an #activitypub or #mastodon developer hangout place that people think is useful?

(In particular I'm trying right now to figure out if there is a protocol magic I can do to make infosec.exchange stop continuously telling me about the deletion of a particular profile I have never interacted with.)

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@jjb

Sure there is.. it is #SocialHub developer community.

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks

The forum itself has federation support (it is part of the testing grounds of the Threadiverse working group).

On Matrix chat there's also a huge #ActivityPub space with a ton of chatrooms to check out..

https://matrix.to/#/#activitypub-community:codelutin.com

And you might join #Lemmy and find a bunch of fedi communities of interest there.

Why I prefer reading #GhostBlog blogs to #Medium and am looking forward to their #ActivityPub networking. I'm not sure if Medium authors remember this is the first impression that many of their blogs will see-- a good part of the page covered with a popover.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@markstos @heybran

With regards to avoiding the tracking there's https://scribe.rip that you can replace a medium url with. You get a cleaned up version of the medium article then.

Unfortunately you cannot bypass restricted access articles that way.

"Social web" is a industry plant, real fediversians know

#fediverse #always

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@dansup maybe. Yet I use it. Not to indicate the online space that fedizens span up, but the suite of protocols that allow that. I recently started to make distinction between fedi and Fediverse as well, btw.

PS. Just tooted to Evan about this: https://social.coop/@smallcircles/112439734527189781

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@gabek @dansup

Yes, in a way. Technical perspective though, where our fight is.

When one asks anyone about web and internet, they know exactly what it is and without the direct association of the Big Tech molochs.

I've said befor that Fediverse - with continued rise in popularity and adoption - will become just as ubiquitous as Web and Internet. A category name mostly, to conceptually delineate part of our shared online space.

As for Social Web. My quest is to "Reimagine Social".

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@gabek @dansup

Most people when hearing "Web" conceptually think of the huge intricately cross-linked body of information that is accessible via the internet. And in this meaning "Internet" is a synonym ("You can find it on the internet").

I've no problem with that.

Where I do take big issue is where Big Tech hijacks a common name as a brand name, and then growth-hack that to become the dominant meaning.

Do you say "Fediverse" or "Social Web"?

smallcircles,

@evan ActivityPub, a Social Web protocol of the Fediverse.

Saddening me time and again is seeing individualism and fragmentation in #FOSS.

#Collaboration between projects that's so often low-hanging fruit, yet never happens. More anticipation of needs, helping each other, be stronger together. Yet it hardly shapes up to the extent that it could.

We seem to lack time to become sustainable, let alone 'win' from #Hypercapitalism. No time to seek collab as we prod on alone.

There are exceptions of course, and better collab tools are becoming available.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@thisismissem @dansup

Thank you both. A lot. You are fabulous for helping this ecosystem to flourish 💕

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@arraybolt3 yes, indeed, there's a lot of those. They are in their right if that has their preference. Though I was also referring to many projects where they know they'd benefit a lot from the collab, yet spending the time to facilitate it is (perceived as) a luxury they (feel they) cannot afford. Even while it may seriously help their long-term sustainability.

Cap. An #AGPL-licensed self-hostable alternative to #Loom:

Implemented in #Typescript and #Rust.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@guenther yes, that can be improved.

Loom is a screen capture service that is very easy to use, and quite popular.

Here's an example Loom recording of Angus McLeod doing an explanation about the ActivityPub integration in Discourse forum software he is working on:

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@guenther yes, guess you can say so. I don't know about all its (social) features, as I am not someone using it myself, but I get frequently passed Loom vids. Often used for giving feedback, where seeing the speaker in the circle is major part of the experience.

Bye bye, 👋

(I decided to keep my account. My statement that SO has some of my work, yet stole it. But I will not, can not contribute anything more.)

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@janvlug over time I got a lot of benefit and also direct help from SO. But the enshittification was always looming.

It is the same for LI btw, where I have some uses for it (until a federated alternative arrives). I recently edited my profile indicating I'm not playing the LI game, though. Should still finish that, but my CV will be elsewhere 😅

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@janvlug there used to be Flockingbird project under development, but the maintainer pivoted to building a job search bot + site, and then abandoned that.

@ggpsv

@hobs did a search on non-federated codebases to build from: https://mstdn.social/@hobs/112414438147753719

And @andre reminded me of @retrospring that has several open #ActivityPub issues on their tracker. Mentioned in this thread, also on the topic of finding alternatives: https://fedi.jaenis.ch/@andre/statuses/01HXH5R3NQ4FER2TXS68YVGGW6

Yes, I think so too. Creating some MVP might be a bit of a low-hanging fruit if one is already well-underway with fedi expertise.
