Just seen an advert on TV for Thatcher's cider.

I bet that brand doesn't sell well in Scotland. :ablobgrimace:

I've spent an interesting hour or two researching cordless vacuum cleaners. Yes, my life really is that exciting. 😃

It's possible to spend hundreds of pounds on models from the high-profile brands. I've decided on a Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1, which I got for £69, incl. delivery. Time will tell if it is any good. Although, at less than half the price of some other models, it is hard to see how it can go wrong.

The war against dog hair continues...

Not needed for my purpose. I've got rid of all my carpets. It only needs to suck from hard surfaces. The lightweight and portability is more important, especially for the stairs. Reviews suggest the suction is very good.

Came across these two bags of un-planted trees (Sitka spruce) in one of the local plantation areas. As far as I can tell, the planting has finished.

Planters normally get paid by piece work, i.e. a monetary amount per tree planted. It is quite likely that these bags have been assumed planted, and paid for. Fancy that. 😃

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@Jkp
Don't think so. 😃
There are too many Sitka spruce already. The bags looked nice though.

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

There are rural myth stories of thousands of young trees buried in big holes, so, the planters could claim them as planted.

I couldn't possibly comment. 😃

Alternatively, dump the trees and keep the bags.

Free range eggs, straight from the hen house. Provided by one of the neighbours, this morning.

The eggs are probably what the supermarket would classify as extra large. They're young hens.

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@mooch
I sometimes get white eggs at the supermarket. Not often though.

A funny story: many years ago I was dispatched to the supermarket to get some white eggs. My gf was dyeing eggs for a decorated table at Easter. The dyeing works best with white eggs.

There were white eggs available, but, not all in one box. I was sorting the white ones into one box when I was approached by a staff member.

Staff: "What are you doing?"
Me: "Erm,..."

I got my box of 12 white eggs. 😃

@mooch
Well, sometimes crazies poison foods, or threaten to, at supermarkets. So, there is that...

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@mooch @edavies
The vast majority of hens kept for laying (in the UK) are Rhode Island Reds. "Speciality" breeds are kept by those selling coloured eggs at speciality prices. White eggs happen due to a complete lack of pigment. Some breeds do this naturally (their genetics mean they have lost the ability to produce the pigment).

However, the age of hens, the time of the season, type of feed, etc., can mean they lay "white" eggs This happens to RIRs, who normally lay brown eggs.

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@saraclark @mooch
I believe most laying hens in the US are Leghorns, who produce white eggs. Most UK hens are Rhode Island Reds, who lay brown eggs.

Currently, listening to "The Black Halo" by Kamelot. Fantastic album; never tire of hearing it. I might put it on repeat.

For my trip, I was debating myself if I should bring my laptop or not (for extracting frames from the GoPro recordings, or using it in case I stay in some hotel due rain). But the idea of riding with a backpack isn't that nice (and my laptop doesn't fit on the motorbike saddlebags).

Get a smaller laptop. I have an X-series ThinkPad for travel use. It is much more portable than my ThinkPad T590.

I'm with Octopus for Electricity. Previously, I was with Bulb. I'm not on the Agile tariff.

My oil is mostly for the Aga. As well as cooking it provides some heat, plus hot water. I don't bother with central heating most of the time. Not worth it for one person (and a dog) in the house. If I'm in the house and need extra heat I put the woodburner on.

Not had much interaction with them. Their estimates have been fairly accurate. I haven't bothered to correct them most of the time. They are one of the last suppliers to still send me a physical bill.

Never had to use customer service.

I decided to treat myself by buying a new satnav for the car. My car doesn't have a satnav built-in, which with hindsight is a good thing.

The new model is a Garmin DriveSmart 76. My main reason for upgrading was to get lifetime map updates, which are installed via WiFi, directly onto the satnav (no PC needed). For me this is a major benefit, as otherwise map updates require a Garmin app running on Mac or Windows. The new unit will replace a Garmin Nuvi 65 LM.

Same here. I never use the radio, and the CD player I've used once, just to satisfy my curiosity. For some strange reason my car has twin phono plugs attached to the Aux in of the "HiFi". I have my 'phone attached to this via the headphone socket. My music collection (in opus, ogg and mp3) then plays on the car speakers. All works nicely.
