But here's the thing with racist structures — they're not in the "best interest" of white people are either. Likewise, patriarchy is awful for men. That doesn't mean there is not (obvious, powerful) benefit (especially, surprise, for those at the top of the power pyramid) but there is also cost, loss, and damage.

How about real property systems, for one.
The consequences of red-lining can still be seen in current neighborhood patterns. Black neighborhoods receive less investment and more policing than white neighborhoods. Black-owned property is more likely to be seized for highway projects and urban renewal, to the advantage of white developers.
