Free Software activists give people control over technology, and help defend their digital #rights. We have created means that have allowed us to become organized and connected, bypassing utilities controlled by unethical corporations.
KDE presents "For Activists": you too can leverage the tools to effectively organize rallies, privately communicate with fellow #community members, and safely manage your own grassroots #movement .
Before we get too far into 2024, we wanted to think about everything that went well - and the things that didn't go so great - for Thunderbird in 2023. Don't get us wrong, while we think some amazing things happened last year, we also want to admit what we could have done differently. 🙂 😐 😕
As always, we'd love to know your thoughts on where - and how - we can improve! 💙
Happy Saturday! Here’s my latest article on how to find and interact with your Flipboard federated account on Mastodon with a tutiorial video. I also help you get started on the Fediverse with Flipboard social. #fediverse#flipboard#mastodon#community
Here's the ever readable @kenanmalik on the problem of outsiders taking on the role of community representation & being recognised as such by hose seeking the 'leaders' of communities to defuse problems (themselves stoked but the outsiders' in their guise as community representatives).... using the example of a teacher in hiding Malik sets out the problem of culture warriors for hire.
I’m still processing everything, but I noticed some commonalities in the kinds of challenges #contributors are facing during this 2024 lonely burnout epoch (I’m not the only one who feels it right?)And I wonder if more #maintainers are facing them too.
So what are the toughest #community/ communications/ outreach challenges you’re tackling?

I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.
As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcoming environment for new contributors OR just being a fun "third place" for our users.
What do YOU think is missing right now? What can we do better? 👂
It's the time of year for quiet reflection and thoughtful planning — rewinding and fast-forwarding, you might say.
When I look back on this past year for #OpenSource I don't see the roadblocks or setbacks, though there were some. I see this community's spirit and willingness to get the work done.
There are so many fun and useful GitHub bots you can write.
But please don't write this kind of bot.
Sure, maintainer can do whatever they want with their project, but I wouldn't want to use their library, let alone contributing to the project.
There are so many other ways to gain followers and likes/stars than holding hostage of other people's PR. This is why your project needs a community builder/manager and devrel.
#PyLadiesCon is a wrap!! 💝
Wish the organizing team could have met and celebrated in person, but because everyone is located all over the world, this is the only celebration we could do.
Thank you team: Denny, Georgi, Cristián, Elka, Martin, Vicky, Maria Jose, Naomi, Cheuk, and Tania. We can't make this happen without them!
Top story: When Fort Worth activist Opal Lee was invited in 2021 to stand alongside President Joe Biden as he signed the bill making #Juneteenth a federal holiday, “I could’ve done a holy dance,” the 97-year-old told the Texas Observer recently. “But the kids said they didn’t want me twerking.” https://www.texasobserver.org/juneteenth-museum-fort-worth-opal-lee/
"Our communities are worth a lot more than the underlying tool used at some point in time. By accepting the confusion, we are destroying our communities. We are selling them, we are transforming them into a simple commercial asset for the makers of the tool we are using, the tool which exploits us"
