Dipping a toe. I have some understanding of the most elementary fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, some practical physics and organic chemistry. I'd like to do a little passive learning if I can, with a view to learning programming later in life. We all see the same truth through a different paradigm, but sometimes math helps us better see and understand and convey the same thing. What a lovely backbone upon which to build a body of communication and thought. I treasure this server.

A personal journey on the piano!

When I was a kid in the 1970s, I took a couple of years of violin lessons and played in school to please my grandfather, who I loved, and wasn’t pushy about it. He had learned to play at age 4, helped found the Tucson Civic Orchestra (he was concertmaster for a time), and played until his 80s, when his arthritis made it impossible. As the owner of furniture stores, his inner life was music, all the time.

May I recommend
Norman Monath's "How to Play Popular Piano in 10 Easy Lessons: The Fastest, Easiest Way to Learn to Play from Sheet Music or by Ear"?

My father told me, for the piano capability I wanted (high-yield learning, low expectations beyond a wee sing song), learning to read a fake book would be the optimal path. He was right, and subsequently a fee of my friends have learnt from the same book! There are usually some cheap copies on AbeBooks.com

It is an international threat, because even though Kyiv is a Russian city by its roots, it is controlled by an international brigade of Russia's opponents headed by the US."

I am always amused by the assertion, when people start to debate the mysteries of conscious experience, that "consciousness is an illusion."

My paraphrase of "cogito, ergo sum”: If consciousness is an illusion, who is being fooled?

doboprobodyne,
@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@maxleibman

No worries.

Illusion is a metaphor.

Just like how we think we pass through time, rather than being in all the moments separately; before, now, in the future - time as we perceive it exists because the moments are perceived in sequence.

But like the use of the word "illusion", language is a clumsy tool, and it's hard to lay some things out in words.

Well, also its possible the folks actually thought they meant illusion, in which case you're right and they're silly. Send em to me for reducation.

You are absolutely spot-on, of course.

I read a marvellous account of this somewhere and I didn't write it down. Very possibly in a medical handbook of ADHD! I will push a message if I am lucky enough to encounter it again.

It pertained to sequencing (in the conscious mind) of perceived events including thoughts.

Great stuff!

I always suspected I would do something like study those amazing desert ants that navigate via the earth’s magnetic field. But when thinking through the question “How do you want to spend the next 10 years?” more seriously (pretending there are few constraints), that’s not where I actually point myself.

Acknowledging that it’s a tremendously priveleged (and emotional) thought experiment, What would you do with your next 10 years, assuming that thing needs to be useful enough that it’s reasonably supported (and you would continue to get a paycheck)?

Fascinating. Thank you for sharing this. In the UK, I expect we shall see this over the next ?5 ?50 years as the NHS changes to emergency care only and private healthcare de-facto takes over non-emergency care. A for-profit company will not want to be run by doctors. This can already be observed in dentistry. I had not seen it so well described in other trades though. Thank you!

i have a hard time believing that using terms like “artificial intelligence” are causing people to believe that it’s “thinking”.

you don’t have to explain to people why artificial grass doesn’t grow. the “artificial” part says that on its own

“lab grown” diamonds are a thing now, they avoided “artificial” diamonds because they’re chemically identical to the real thing

besides, there’s far simpler explanations — e.g. the “AI is going to take over the world” messaging

doboprobodyne,
@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@mistersql @kellogh

Not sure if it helps but if you'll forgive me lazily trying to coin a descriptor, I try to use the term "meta-algorithm" to describe technologies commonly referred to as AI, to emphasise that it's code is a construct derived from an algorithm and lots of data.

I think both "artificial" and "intelligence" are very poorly defined words. Frankly I'm disinclined to attribute "intelligence" to animals/humans.

#AI #semantics #metaAlgorithm

edited to add: I reserve judgement about Collies; they might be intelligent!

doboprobodyne,
@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@kellogh @mistersql

Because "learning" is an anthropomorphisation, and because I'm not sure it describes the way in which the source data is statistically encoded within the resulting algorithm.

Thus I would dispute the assertion that "meta-algorithm" and "machine learning" have nearly the exact same definition.

doboprobodyne,

@kellogh @mistersql

I beg your pardon; I saw only your second toot and pressed reply without looking for a first.

I think we are both right, but I had not twigged that you thought it improbable that folks might anthropomorphise the machines. In my limited experience humans have a low threshold for thinking in terms of analogy, and I suspect this leads to a low threshold for anthropomorphisation.

You're quite right about the dictionary definition of learning. I'm slightly hesitant to agree beyond that but because of my own ignorance rather than anything else: I am disinclined to call a "hard disk drive" "machine-knowledge" because it seems to me to be too close to thinking by analogy, when such is not necessary.

I know, it's a slippery slope to arguing with a reporter about learning by analogy like that famous video of Richard Feynman, or correcting one's grandchildren for being lazy using "car" as a contraction of "motor-car" (thanks Gran :P ), or readjusting one's students for saying "plane" when they mean "airplane".

As much as I wish "meta-algorithm" might be a preferred term, I realise it never will be. Forgive me; I think I replied on an optimistic day xD English teachers, indeed any linguists, everywhere will agree that language is a fickle mistress; perhaps only slightly less fickle than thought herself.

I hope it is some small consolation that I think right and wrong are constructs of the animal mind, that I accept p>0.05 as probably being real, and that we're probably both right.

Starmer may be adhering to the maxim "Never Interfere With an Enemy While He’s in the Process of Destroying Himself".

Just as many would support abolishing the House of Lords, many other folks would like a House of Lords bursting with erudite experts, motivated solely by the best interests of the UK populace, who they trust more than politicians to write the laws that will govern future generations.

To be sure Johnson's abominable decision to put Lebedev in the Lords ought to put the kibosh on anyone who so believes voting conservative, but the background around Lebedev's wealth received precious little media attention.

Nevertheless; from Starmer's view, courting controversy when he is not required to do so would be a strategically poor choice.
