Dipping a toe. I have some understanding of the most elementary fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, some practical physics and organic chemistry. I'd like to do a little passive learning if I can, with a view to learning programming later in life. We all see the same truth through a different paradigm, but sometimes math helps us better see and understand and convey the same thing. What a lovely backbone upon which to build a body of communication and thought. I treasure this server.

This week's net.wars, "The data grab" watches uneasily as many more players scrabble for new sources of data to feed their AI models...and existing models make trouble in the real world: https://netwars.pelicancrossing.net/2023/08/11/the-data-grab/ #NetWars #AI #algorithms #OpenSource

🤯
Can you imagine if all Machine Automation written using public #data without having explicitly sought the author's permission had to be published under the #GNU licence?

> Whatever has been going on until now with data slurping in the interests of bombarding us with microtargeted ads is small stuff compared to the accelerating acquisition for the purpose of feeding AI models. Arguably, AI could be a public good in the long term as it improves, and therefore allowing these companies to access all available data for training is in the public interest. But if that’s true, then the public should own the models, not the companies. Why should we consent to the use of our data so they can sell it back to us and keep the proceeds for their shareholders?

Lyft driver last night decided to tell me his life story. The guy was more than a bit unhinged, so I just let him talk.

Veteran, tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Starts talking about his domestic violence towards his ex-wife and children, laughing about how he had only jokingly threatened to break his children's legs, and when he stabbed his wife in the arm with a wire, it wasn't really a stabbing.

"I told the judge, if I had wanted to stab her, she'd be dead."

Complains in great detail about all the money she took from him, his prison time for the assault, and describes with glee hiding his assets in his vintage car. "New chrome, new hood, new tires - bitch wasn't gonna see that money!"

Continues on about how his new girl came from Iraq and knows what a war zone is like. Brags that he'll send her back if she doesn't marry him. Turns out he's never seen her in person, but has sent her over $7k through some online hookup site that charges per message. Goes off on how he helped her move from Canada to Chicago (we're in California), and complains about how each time he sends her money to come out west, she never shows up.

"I've bought the tux, the wedding dress - it's all ready to go - it's that or Iraq."

Note that all of this was punctuated with constant bouts of chuckling and provided completely unprompted - I said maybe three words the entire trip.

Why do I relate this story? First, it was watching bad karma in action, both the fuck around and find out phases wrapped up in a tidy taxi ride.

But I found myself wondering what he was like as a child... he was clearly struggling in the smarts department, but he had a natural friendliness that belied the horrible shit coming out of his mouth. It got me thinking to what this guy might have been like had the army not put a gun in his hand and sent him overseas to kill. He was in his forties, but his mind was that of a violent teenager - almost as if it had been frozen at the point in time when he was deployed.

I speak about this because I've seen the same pattern in other vets I've known, including some I went to high school with (1st Gulf War vets). Something gets permanently broken in them, keeping them in a state of constant angry adolescence that takes childish glee in abuse, cruelty and savagery as a way to normalize their experience.

And then they come home, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake as they try to integrate to a peacetime existence, unable to grow up, Peter Pan with a gun in hand.

I wish someone had made this clear to my friends who joined up. There's more than one of them who's too dangerous to be a friend to now.

hey, in a debate with @thecatcollective

over parents being delusional,

can you list any open source software that has become the industry standard, so far i got

  • obs- video-streaming
  • android
  • Linux and BSD on servers
  • both chrome and firefox are
    based on open source
doboprobodyne,
@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@kkarhan @animemer @thecatcollective

#openBSD runs servers and computers at #banks and other high-reliability-requirement institutions.

It gave rise to #openSSH and #libreSSL which I believe windows 10 uses to improve your parents' security online.

#ada was #DOD developed for defence application and now runs everything from #missiles to #railway signalling networks to #autopilots

The same is also true for #freeRTOS and #RTEMS which drive rockets into space. There are many #openSource programs involved in rocketry at the highest levels, both civil and martial.

Perhaps most importantly to them, these are things you can exploit freely, a torch passed to you by others, free as in speech, a tool to better command whatever hardware you elect to use.

I hope you succeed in giving them some food for thought about different ways to achieve success ;)

I'm going to the Orkney Islands! I'll be staying in Kirkwall but plan to visit various archaeological sites - in particular the Ness of Brodgar, on the same island. This is a complex of monumental Neolithic buildings dating from around 3000 BC. There's a dig there now, but in 2024 it'll be covered over and backfilled to save it for future archaeologists. So this may be the last time to see it before our civilization crashes.

Speaking of which: due to the climate crisis I try to avoid flying around and spewing out carbon, but I haven't managed to completely resist traveling, so I've compromised by only making one long flight this year, for a 6-month visit to Edinburgh. While here I will indulge myself in some local travel. The bleak and northerly Orkney Islands, with their many Neolithic sites, have always fascinated me.

I know some people think that ads are a necessary evil, but I don't. I think we should be able to use social media platforms without being constantly bombarded by ads.

So thanks, Mastodon, for being a place to connect with my peeps without having to worry about ads. I appreciate it.

Hear hear. I think 'evil' is perhaps a step on the road to hyperbole, but if we might stick to the (OK, only marginally more objective) #economics of #decentralised #SocialMedia , the users externalise their costs, unless they're making it worth the provider's expense. (Thanks @ColinTheMathmo !)

I'd love to know if it was possible to throw context dependent #advertising up alongside a #kbin instance to fund its operation, as I don't think most users are ready to pay for social media, but I wouldn't wish to fund it by mining their data and selling it.

concise reminders of international are always welcome in my feed!

I'm always wary when I find myself agreeing with a politician, so with that caveat, I note the said the "only reason this is an issue at all is because of Russia's unprovoked full-scale invasion". The Kakhova dam on the Dnipro river provided a vehicular bridge that may have been useful to 's in re-establishing Ukraine's borders as they were understood when the was agreed to. https://liveuamap.com/en/2023/6-june-level-of-water-in-kakhovka-water-reservoir-is-rapidly Only the top of the dam is damaged but I hope might tell us about how fragile or robust these structures are.

Is now the time for discussion of a or mission to the Power Station, and secure it from all military activity?

At the risk of sounding corny, I think most people in the world would agree that re-opening for generations a pathway toward is an essential pillar of preservation, and human .

@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@kravietz @LukaszOlejnik

Thank you! that's a really thoughtful post. To me, it really drives home @LukaszOlejnik 's excellent observation about the #GenevaConventions.

Humanity's striving to respect the #RightToLife of non-combatants has been observed to occur both as a religious (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_peace_traditions#Peace_of_God) and martial (https://cilj.co.uk/2020/08/30/sun-tzus-art-of-war-and-the-first-principles-of-international-humanitarian-law/) principle, but was only really codified into law by Lieber in #America 's #CivilWar (https://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/lieber.asp) and took longer still to be brought into widespread #InternationalLaw (https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/documents/atrocity-crimes/Doc.32_GC-III-EN.pdf)

I realise that's longwinded, but that #respect for life I describe the "world" as having - even in #war - is as fragile as it is important, and it's formal adoption is still being kindled, being fanned into the torch that we all hope will light our way forever. I hope such careful posts as yours will continue to galvanise to action those who want a pathway toward #non-combatants not being killed en-mass to achieve paltry, indecisive #martial objectives.

I include a link to the wikipedia #WestphalianSystem article for completeness, as I suspect the principles it describes, and upon which it sought to maintain peace, are those on which people often very widely agree: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westphalian_system
