@peotr26@fosstodon.org

I'm a French leftist tech hobbyist and nerd. I like OSes and retro computing. I hate IA and big tech. I prefer FOSS to proprietary software.

"What is being leftist? In my eyes, it is to feed from a diverse root: libertarianism (to thrive the individual), socialism (improving the society), communism (community and fraternity), and from now on environmentalism therewith to tie a new relationship with nature." - Edgar Morin.

Can I please get an Android email app without AI. I don't need AI. I don't want AI.

This is ridiculous.

peotr26,

@thelinuxcast There is @k9mail, it's a FOSS project, and it's planned to become Thunderbird for mobile devices.

peotr26,

@thelinuxcast @k9mail I can understand. I have high hope for the redesign. The Thunderbird team has done a great job on the desktop side.

Moshidon and Megalodon are shaping up to be such good Mastodon clients for Android. They’re fluid, native, Material You, and based on the upstream codebase—but they add extremely nice features that are lacking in the “official” app.

Open source is so cool. Even if the upstream project is more top-down driven and less of a community effort, it still allows for awesome downstreams like this.

peotr26,

@cassidy As a Moshidon user, I can't disagree.

I first used Tokodon as my mobile client. As I upgraded to a newer Android version, I wanted to have Material You support, so I switched to Moshidon, and I don't regret.

I don't get open-source haters.

Just passed my driving licensed exam successfully. Let's hope I'm not going to need it too much.

The process of learning to drive is terrible. All driving schools are terrible, they try to make you do more hours than you should need.

I really hope the future generations don't have to go through that mess.

peotr26,

@Gina Thanks

What a mess of an apology video
Monetized with 2 merch plugs
Spreading in jokes to break the tension
Leaking value of the Billet Labs prototype which they didn't want to make public
Lying about emailing them before the controversy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cTpTMl8kFY

peotr26,

@BrodieOnLinux One of the bad effects this controversy is going to have is tarnishing the public image of reputable brands that had strong tides with LMG such as Noctua or Framework. Not that I'm going to boycott them, it isn't their fault after all.

peotr26,

@BrodieOnLinux I expect them to come out of the controversy without being too much impacted, but you never know with the Internet.

Is there a summary of the current fiasco?

peotr26,

@alda You light just want to wait a week or two. There is something new every few hours. Madison, an ex-employ, just released a thread about awful work conditions at LMG.

It seems like the GN's video did have an effect on LTT's viewership. I know that AMD Ultimate Tech Upgrade will get more views than a Why is Everyone buying this *. But, 350K views is still low, even a day later.

peotr26,

@Nouvanity The video is still at 469K. It has been a long time since I have seen a video from LTT perform this bad. But maybe in 5 month or 5 yeard it will see a spike, you never know with YouTube.

@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

So who has seen that GamersNexus video about LTT

peotr26,

@BrodieOnLinux I have a hard time when he pro-unions, but not in his own company. Unions doesn't mean you are a bad boss. It's just a defense mechanism for the workers is something goes wrong. And you can't just support something when it doesn't to you, but not when it applies to you, oppose it.

peotr26, to retrocomputing

The retro computing and free software communities have demonstrated that we don't need a new hardware release every 2/3 years, but instead every decade. We can get the same result in terms of performance by just optimizing your software code base.

Good code on slower hardware can be faster than bad code on faster hardware.

Everyone benefits from the user to the Earth. The only one that won't be happy are big tech corporations.

This is what happens when you have hostile and IP laws that were custom-tailored to enrich a handful of individual corporate interests, rather than benefit the public good. Copyright law needs to be burned to the ground and re-written in a way that solves problems like this. 🔥

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/07/87-of-classic-games-are-out-of-print-thats-a-problem-for-gaming-history/

peotr26,

@tilvids What about removing copyright all together. Its a shitty system that is designed around capitalism. It doesn't protect small creators, and enrich very few people.

peotr26,

@ZILtoid1991 @tilvids That the first thing to do. It will help with a lot of issues if people put effort after. Reducing inequalities, reducing greenhouse gases emissions, and unsatisfying labor.

@thelinuxEXP I got this by message... Wtf is happening in France?

video/mp4

peotr26,

@TechXero @thelinuxEXP We had the youth from suburb violently revolting since a 17-years-old teenager from immigrant descent was shot, and killed, by a police officer during a traffic control.

The man in the video is from the far-right, and he is saying that this is due to us letting immigrants come to France, and that we are doomed.

Of course, those revolts are due to the gov neglecting the suburb and the inherent racism in the police.

peotr26,

@TechXero @thelinuxEXP French inherent racism and xenophobia is coming back at us really hard.

How Did Linux Takeover The Unix World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7YVKV4kJjk

peotr26,

@BrodieOnLinux

BSDs are important to the Internet. Some enterprises do use it for there servers, the main one being Netflix.

Its license did help BSDs to grow. It allowed company like Apple, Sony or Nintendo to base their OS on it, not that they contribute back.

Also, most BSDs project have clear structure and goals. The whole OS is designed by one group of person with specific goals in mind. They have a much more developed software engineering culture.

Red Hat is not in violation of GPL if they put their source code behind a paywall.

They are in violation of community trust and decades of precedent.

peotr26,

@geerlingguy The worst part is that they create a strong precedent for other companies to do it.

Dear Red Hat:

are you dumb?

https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/furthering-evolution-centos-stream

I am seriously considering dropping support for all RHEL/Fedora on all my Ansible work.

peotr26,

@AudraTran @geerlingguy Fedora is upstream, so it shouldn't impact you or any Fedora user that much. The actual impact is on distros based on RHEL such as Alma or Rocky.

The only impact I can see is the one on the Red Hat company, which employs many devs who work on Fedora.

Just started my migration from GitHub to @Codeberg I must say that I wasn't expecting for it to be that easy to migrate my repos.

peotr26,

I can also now integrate git in Kate without it being such a hassle.
