Just another hacker. He/him.

I only picked this handle because I'm semi-obsessed with Skunk Anansie.

My Erdős number is 4.

Serious question: for those of you that have an electric car, what are the best and worst things about it?

blacktraffic,

@austinkocher kia eNiro 2019.

Very happy - I never buy cars for performance, but this thing shifts.

Range of 250 miles is very do-able.

what's a popular command line tool (other than git) that you wish had a clearer / more intuitive UI? I'm thinking of tools like dig which has this IMO pretty arcane output format

blacktraffic,

@b0rk maybe I’ve been DNSing too long because I quite like the output.

I guess it’s no worse than BIND zonefiles? But maybe that is a low bar.

Given the timeline for the release of #threads, it's painfully obvious that #p92 was not in good faith. What kind of changes based on admin feedback could possibly have happened between then and now?

blacktraffic,

@mttaggart if it’s not available in EU, as someone was just saying, that answers a bunch of questions I had.

I’m going to find the person who made iPhones capitalise emacs as eMacs and I am going to explain some things.

Republicans been this way for a long time. Try to make an enemy out of everything

God Only Knows why: when a Reagan aide took aim at the Beach Boys

blacktraffic,

@BigAngBlack @BruceMirken think I would rather be attacked by James Watts rather than defended by Nancy Reagan.

If your discourse is on the level of “Java is shit” I’m blocking you.

billyanders, to queer

Honest question for folks...

Can you be an ally to underserved, minority, oppressed groups, while voting for politicians, parties, and policies, that you know hurt them?

I want all the smoke💨, both sides, and would especially like to hear from those that present themselves as "allies" (eg, attending events at work, zoom backgrounds, yard signs, t-shirts,...), but for their own reasons, vote counter to the people they are allies to... and why it's okay?

#BlackMastodon
#LGBTQIA
#womensrights

blacktraffic,

@billyanders how can you say you support X and then take actions to make things worse? (I’m in UK but our “conservatives” are more reactionary than conservative these days - they will generally oppose any good idea)

blacktraffic,

@billyanders they’ve lost the next election on living costs, so they seem to be trying to out-right-wing everything and everyone.

I fuckin hate the "Java sucks. It's SLOOOOW" dipshits. It makes you look like a negative ****, but also like someone who's never dealt with anything particularly big.

(Yes, it sucks - so does all software. It's not so much worse than any other environment out there, depending on your task.)

Yer losing the next election cos of mortgage costs yer bunch of no-hopers. It’s done - the moving hand hath writ etc.

It's probably obvious to most of you, but a big difference between the commercial social media platforms and the fediverse is that as those commercial platform grow, they get additional revenue from ads, from selling personal information, and otherwise monetizing their users. While that is turning out to not actually pay the bills for them, in the fediverse, just about every instance is run by volunteers and funded by donations or out of the volunteers' pockets. It's a labor of love and a hope for a better future. When traffic grows, we need to expand our capacity.

That is why I am asking, if you are able, please consider donating to the instance you on to help keep the fediverse ecosystem going. Typically the /about web page will have details on how to donate.

Note: I am well aware that many of you are not in a financial position to donate - and that is OK. We are here to serve you as well. Donations are completely optional.

blacktraffic,

@jerry done, thank you.

I have decided to wallpaper my steampunk / Victorian office to make my video background more exciting, but I have unfortunately also now realized that I’m a millennial and have absolutely no idea how wallpaper is installed, and neither do any of my friends or YouTube feeds. What even is a wallpaper that’s not on a computer, anyway?

blacktraffic,

@hacks4pancakes as I’m under caffeinated I thought this was a section from a Hieronymous Bosch for a second.

So, yesterday, Purdue's IT staff decided to shut off --without warning -- access to the campus SMTP server for those of us who use it because of some undefined abuse. That didn't affect the majority of students or faculty because they use MS Office365. However, those of us who run our own customized client software were SOL.

Do they have an alternative for us? Nope. The help desk says the only solution is to switch to Office365. I, for one, will not welcome our new MS overlords.

blacktraffic,

@spaf @lifeatpurdue lifeatpurdue sounds like a custodial sentence.

btw, I used to be abuse@ for a uni, they are talking absolute hog wash as I’m sure you know.

blacktraffic,

@spaf @lifeatpurdue personally, i would die of embarrassment before admitting I couldn’t safely operate smtp for a bunch of students. (with us, it was either students, departmental IT or the CS dept who used to cause problems)

I forgot how painful it is to study for certs, to put aside reality and remember their weird ideas. The problem with what’s below should be obvious. Nnnnggggg 😖 It’s insulting too. I’d like to smack the person who came up with this and make them read samy kamkar’s articles and keep smacking them until they can demonstrate comprehension.

blacktraffic,

Nobody will remember:

  • Your salary
  • How you worked nights
  • How stressed you were
  • How you never missed a day

People will remember:

  • when you showed up with a bomb
  • locked them in the board room
  • ziptied them to a chair
  • forced them to read your manifesto aloud

@MiseryTrickery well now I need to watch Airheads again.
