What band or music group would you not have minded if they didn't have a certain band member?

My pick is Five Finger Death Punch and the obvious answer is Ivan Moody. The guy radiates that alpha-male wannabe energy and it definitely rings through all of the songs he has written and performed with this band. The guy is just a prick and a self-victimizing asshole.

I think he's the primary reason FFDP is mocked so badly.

@spittingimage@lemmy.world avatar

I’d be more likely to listen to AC/DC without Brian Johnson. He hasn’t done anything wrong (that I know of) and he’s a talented vocalist, but that rasping voice of his makes me wince every time I hear it. Does he gargle glass shards?

JPSound,

Honestly… Maynard from TOOL. Tool is my favorite band for decades at this point but if anyone had to go, it would be him. We’d get more albums from Danny, Adam and Justin and none of the snobby asshole attitude MJK brings to the band. I’m not anti-MJK but I’d love to get a version of TOOL without him in the mix.

snownyte,
snownyte avatar

Maynard is the poster-boy of pretentious.

The very thing so many Tool fans aspire to be, that project this 'Third-Eye' that they claim to have and see things that they claim nobody else can see or express.

They say very intelligent things like "you know, the world sucks and the two-party system is destroying us".

Things that are incredibly common these days.

technomad,

Tool, (more) instrumental

:)

JPSound,

Hell yeah. 74 solid minutes Danny shredding, spattered across the entire album with Adam, and J-d-o double G takin us on a kickass adventure. Damn that would be sweet.

technomad,

Yep, I’d buy that so fast…

On a side note, ever heard of Soen?

baggachipz,

Smashing Pumpkins. I hear their intros and guitars and I’m like “oh cool”, then in comes that screeching loser Billy Corgan, his voice the sound of a thousand fingernails on a thousand blackboards.

Disco_Dougie,

Guns N Roses. It amazes me that there are people who listen to them in purpose. I can’t stand them. But 90% of it is just because of Axl Rose. Slash is a great guitarist, and it’s a shame he’s drowned out by the sounds of a clown punching a cat.

VindictiveJudge,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

GNR is definitely one where I like the singing sometimes and hate it others. Strongly depends on the song.

TwoBeeSan,

Muse without the vocals.

Love the instrumentals, vocals strike me as written by a teenage theatre kid. Overly dramatic and theatrical in a way that doesn’t fit well imo.

Will listen to the first 45 seconds of “assassin” then it’s tike to turn it off lol youtu.be/nNPSSs1xnpY?si=sfnQHjlgclCEwWwZ

JamesTBagg,

I feel the same about a lot of metal. I often really love the instrumental portion of lots of really heavy metal, then often the vocalist opens his fucking mouth and ruins it.

AstralPath,

To each their own, I suppose.

snownyte,
snownyte avatar

This is death metal and black metal for me.

Badass instrumentals. Why the fuck is the vocalist a growling cookie monster? Can't even comprehend a single fucking word he's "singing" and yet the song somehow has lyrics. I can barely, BARELY tolerate Cannibal Corpse for the reason that I can comprehend the vocalist.

technomad,

Could you give us some specifics?

AstralPath, (edited )

Muse was once described to me as the Queen of the modern era. I struggled so hard not to laugh. Muse is alright. They sure as hell ain’t even close to Queen vocally or musically.

obelix,

Bellamy has larped as Jeff Buckley since the very beginning.

WeLoveCastingSpellz,

Justin Sane from anti flag used his fame to rape people. I can’t listen to them anymore without thinking of this, which sucks

anarchyrabbit,

Yep, I have removed AF from all my playlists.

core,

Led Zeppelin. I like the music but not the vocals.

MutilationWave,

I get what you’re saying but how do you feel about the vocals on Immigrant Song?

core,

Doesn’t do anything for me.

southsamurai,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

I feel you on ffdp.

And it sucks because their sound is great. And I dig his vocals. But gods damn, the lyrics are just so juvenile, fratboyish, edgelord bullshit most of the time. Like, if you take individual songs, it isn’t too bad; nothing wrong with a little bit of lyrical bullshit now and then. But it’s pretty much every song, so it wears thin after a while.

JamesTBagg,

Yeah, they sound good, his voice is great. I like American Capitalist (I just assume it’s satire) and and Wrong Side of Heaven makes me feel some shit (being a veteran), they’re covers are pretty good, but a lot of it falls flat or just eh.

Scubus,

Far from home is above and beyond their best song imo, followed by coming down

JamesTBagg, (edited )

Fair opinion. The Bleeding put them on the map for a reason too. Maybe I’ll give FFDP some more listens.

It's when he gets into the "Why does everyone hate me" and "FUCK EVERYONE WHO'S NOT LIKE ME AND CAN'T HANDLE ME I DRINK MONSTER, FUCK EVERYONE RAHHH!!" rhetoric is where he gets really unbearable.

I don’t know what Michael Keene is doing in The Faceless but he goes through band members like most people go through socks

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Faceless

AstralPath,

Keene has struggled a lot with drugs over the years. He’s notoriously difficult to work with. Its a shame because he’s an incredible musician. I really hope he can get his shit together.

amio,

Roger Waters put a damper on my enjoyment of Pink Floyd.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

He is anti hunting, anti poverty, anti malaria, anti Israel, pro veteran, anti fascist, anti chevron, anti brexit and pro Assange.

Which part dampens your enjoyment?

Rhynoplaz,

I fucking LOVE malaria and I ain’t letting him take that from me!

amio,

The pro Russia part does.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

Wikipedia didn’t cover Russia in detail so I did some reading.

“The invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation was illegal. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms”

“Also, the Russian invasion of Ukraine was not unprovoked, so I also condemn the provocateurs in the strongest possible terms”

www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-64580688

He calls Putin a gangster.

I think his opinions are naive. He identifies Western Propaganda but ignores the possibility that Putin is lying.

He seems to be consistently anti war though so I’m not going to burn my Pink Floyd collection … yet

PatMustard,

He’s one of those guys who hates America so much that he starts to think anyone who goes up against them must be the good guy (I’m sure nobody on Lemmy could possibly imagine such a situation!), missing the point that lots of people/countries/organisations can all be bad.

He’s a complete edgelord and always has been, but that has always been a recipe for great art!

RizzRustbolt,

Someone should chuck Assange in a woodchipper and be done with it.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

Why? He’s just a journalist.

PatMustard,

Pink Floyd would have been completely different without him though

neidu2, (edited )

Lostprophets. It should be obvious who and why.

I also think Guns’n Roses have soome fucking awesome riffs and songs, but I find Axl Rose to be an insufferable cunt of a diva. Slash, Izzy, Duff, and Adler should have released Appetite for Destruction with a different vocalist.

TrickDacy,

Axl Rose seems like a dick, but would it have been the same band without him? His really unusual voice is a lot of the appeal of the music imo

neidu2,

True, he’s got a unique and interesting voice… but is it worth it?

TrickDacy,

Worth it how? Either he exists in the band or exists not in the band. I think I prefer a world with appetite for destruction in its current rendition

neidu2,

I’m thinking that without him, maybe the rest of the band didn’t have to be so drugged up to tolerate each other long term, perhaps keeping the original lineup for longer.

TrickDacy,

Maybe there is another singer they would’ve found which could’ve still led to them being famous, but it’s hard for me to think that could’ve happened

neidu2, (edited )

From my limited understand8ng of their formation history, GnR was the result of fusing members from LA Guns with some other band named something Hollywood Rose. Axl came from the latter.

The LA Guns vocalist was Tracii Guns who took part in forming GnR as a guitarist, but left shortly after and Slash took his place. I’m curious how things would’ve turned out if he’d remained as only a singer.

TrickDacy,

Interesting. I forgot about the fusing of those bands. I’ve never listened to LA Guns until just now… so, to my ear they sound like a lot of other bands like Dokken or Judas Priest. As a vocalist, I think Axl is far better. LA Guns doesn’t have a unique sound from what I can tell. Not terrible, I just feel like I’ve heard it before even though I don’t think I have.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In, (edited )

🎶Where do we go now🎶 … nowhere without Axl.

The epic tracks in use your illusion were mostly Axl, that could count for or against.

TrickDacy,

I’m with you. I liked those albums. Dead Horse is one of my favorite GnR songs actually.

snownyte,
snownyte avatar

Two people I argue make that band - Axl and Slash.

Axl would have a hard time going with another guitarist if they weren't Slash.

TrickDacy,

I agree on both points.

yukichigai,

I loved their first album, listened to it a lot. Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja and The Fake Sound of Progress are both amazing tracks. Unfortunately they're both vocalized by a literal baby rapist, so it's hard to rock out to them now. Asshole wrote the tracks too, so I doubt No Devotion will ever cover them.

As for Guns N' Roses, a friend pointed out something that's been living in my head for months now: Axl Rose is the Starscream of Guns N' Roses.

When you see how insanely high some fines were the whole approach of punishing music piracy destroyed countless lives and cost a ton of people a lot of money. I think there was even prsion time for some. For something that doesn’t even hurt the Industry. People who participate in that shit are literal villains.

The fines were so out of proportion. It’s like I sit on your glasses and now i have to pay you $100k

Anthony Kiedis statutorily raped a 14 yo.

I like their music and had friends who played them a lot through a great period in my life. But, when I hear them now and can’t not think “that fucker’s a pedophile”.

Oh, gross. I didn’t know about that. “Didn’t know her age” initially, then found out, then had sex again anyways, then wrote a song about it that the RHCP played for decades.

Any “separate the art from the artist” argument falls apart when the pedo artist’s art is about the crime.

Bdtrngl,

This one bums me out because Chad Smith is a great drummer and seems like such a a good dude.

obelix,

Him and Flea sharked an MTV presenter during a live broadcast. They subsequently apologised but still, they ain’t exactly good people.

technomad,

What does that even mean? Lol

obelix,

Flea and Chad Smith chased a woman just after the broadcast ended and tried to forcefully pull her bikini off. They were arrested.

For reference.

For clarity.

darkdemize,

Along those same lines, Limp Bizkit because of Fred Durst. They still would have been pretty mid, but maybe I wouldn’t go out of my way to skip their songs when they sneak onto my playlists.

Fuck Fred Durst. Fucking riff-stealing crybaby.

NewNewAccount,

He stole riffs?

darkdemize,

Indeed he did. Years ago, they were holding auditions in my area for a new guitarist after Wes Borland left. They asked people to demo stuff they had written, rather than try to play along with their current songs. After auditions wrapped, they didn’t pick anyone and life went on.

Cut to a few months later when their next album dropped. The local rock station that helped sponsor the audition starts getting numerous calls from people saying the material they demoed during the audition got incorporated into songs from the new album. No credit or compensation was given to any of them. From that point on, the radio station rightfully blacklisted them.
