Trust but verify

djb,

@lcamtuf @m0noc I’m bringing serious to a joke, but I found this chat enlightening. “Trust but verify” always bugged me, if you’re verifying you’re not trusting. And then it all becomes clear. It’s a joke. Like, “I’m saying I trust you , but i don’t “

Speaking of San Francisco restaurants and how often I’m disappointed by them, this is one of my favorite ones: https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/cantoo-chinese-venezuelan-food-sf-18599314.php

Eek! 😱 Japan Airlines pilots in Tokyo plane crash had to be told of fire by cabin crew – Flight attendants needed permission from cockpit to open emergency exits, broadcaster reports

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/04/japan-plane-crash-haneda-airport-japan-airlines-pilots-cabin-crew-fire-tokyo

djb,

@kcarruthers need to be careful with reporting like this, if the source is people on board not airline people. there's well rehearsed procedures the cabin crew and flight deck crew follow. there's things that can go badly wrong if they open doors and slides willy-nilly. everyone was evacuated very quickly. from reading it, passengers may have misunderstood the crew "telling" the pilots of the fire. there's a lot of cross checking as human error is to be expected and catered for, not prevented.

edit: this is misleading.
"It took 18 minutes to evacuate the entire plane, with the pilot the last person to set foot on the tarmac at 6:05 pm." as another article gives a clearer "According to the airline, all 367 passengers and 12 crew disembarked in 18 minutes, although it is not immediately clear how much of the time was spent physically getting passengers down slides."

Hello!

It's me again: Your yearly reminder that drives fail, SSDs bitrot, and you probably need to do a review of your backup strategy. You should have at least two copies of anything you care about.

This message brought to you by a second drive in my ZFS array failing while the first one was still rebuilding. Happy holidays.

    djb,

@skinnylatte I’m considering the Melanin implant treatment. I have the worst genetics for skin cancer. I sunburn in 10mins.
