So, yesterday, Purdue's IT staff decided to shut off --without warning -- access to the campus SMTP server for those of us who use it because of some undefined abuse. That didn't affect the majority of students or faculty because they use MS Office365. However, those of us who run our own customized client software were SOL.

Do they have an alternative for us? Nope. The help desk says the only solution is to switch to Office365. I, for one, will not welcome our new MS overlords.

@spaf Yuck. I have to use a VPN to do SMTP sends from cellular, even though I'm logging in with my university ID. But if I'm on residential WiFi, even someone else's residential WiFi, I'm golden. (I haven't tried hotspot WiFi yet.)

@SteveBellovin They shut off the possibility of even sending via the VPN!

I wonder if they have Elon Musk advising them?

Maybe I should reconsider retirement.

In the meantime, avoid sending email to my Purdue address as I cannot easily reply. I'll get the email, but if I reply it will be on some other account.

(This will become an example in my security classes of how NOT to address a security threat.)

blacktraffic,

@spaf @lifeatpurdue lifeatpurdue sounds like a custodial sentence.

btw, I used to be abuse@ for a uni, they are talking absolute hog wash as I’m sure you know.

@blacktraffic @lifeatpurdue

Yes, they are using this as an excuse to drop internal support for something.

blacktraffic,

@spaf @lifeatpurdue personally, i would die of embarrassment before admitting I couldn’t safely operate smtp for a bunch of students. (with us, it was either students, departmental IT or the CS dept who used to cause problems)

h2onolan,

@blacktraffic @spaf @lifeatpurdue maybe the IT dept has lost the skills necessary to safely operate an SMTP service and decided to jettision it. edu networks are pretty notorious cesspits after all:
