American railroads are pissed off that the gummint wants to shut down coal production and use. That's because the railroads haul LOTSA coal. They are scared of going out of business. But HEY, Railroads! Why not haul passengers instead? There's lotsa demand and you'll have lotsa unused right-of-way and infrastructure and institutional knowledge. Sounds good to me!

Well, that went poorly. Just a bunch of blank screens and unresponsive flashing cursors, even after updating graphics drivers.

So, I figure, maybe it was just not the best distro. So, I try downloading a whole other one. It has its own program to download an image and write it to a USB stick. Great. I wait and that finishes and I try to boot it and... it fails disk validation.

People, this is why will never overtake Apple & Microsoft. I want to believe and I'm super tech oriented and I can't even install the damn thing.

@OrionKidder LinuxMint was the first one I tried. Got it installed okay, but I just could not get it to run with non-software graphics, even after using their built-in driver manager.

@carloshr I tried LinuxMint Cinnamon first; couldn't get it to run with hardware graphics.

Then I tried Fedora and had the bad image issue.

I found someone's credit card on the sidewalk! Now I am going to experiment with sending electrical signals to the chip on the card, which I know will eventually result in the secure element permanently disabling myself. Then I'm going to shred the card when I find it useless.

New puppy who dis?

We added a beagle mix rescue puppy to our family yesterday (someone left 6 puppies on the side of a road in a box marked “free puppies” 😢) and he’s a sweet guy.

Please help out dog rescues/rescue dogs if you can. So many need help. And excuse me if I’m here a lot less for awhile.

@ThinkingSapien Pretty sure it's mostly nonsense. I mean, sure, theft happens. But the media seem to be obsessed with shoplifters and squatters right now, so they're going out of their way to get footage.

Kind of like how Boeing had one big failure (where nobody got hurt) and then the media covered every other little thing they normally wouldn't even notice and now people are scared to fly on Boeing planes.

I think whenever I see a headline or a person making some claim about the first reaction needs to be, “Okay, section 230 of what? What do you think that refers to?”

So many people have no idea what section 230 actually says, or does, but at least this response would help weed out the most uninformed of the people spouting out about it.

@volkris Why, though? The CDA basically doesn’t exist anymore. That’s like asking somebody about the League of Nations to gauge their knowledge of the UN.

Imo, the better question is: “What line do you think S230 draws between platforms and publishers?” Then, when they respond, you can point out that the word “platform” never appears in the law.

Section 230 does not protect community on the internet, anymore than electric cars will save the environment.

Moreover, S230 protects Mastodon admins from being liable for the content of their users' speech. How many admins would still run their instance if they could be sued for dumb shit their users said?

Your "logical reasoning" is the same kind that was used to advocate for keeping slavery legal to avoid a civil war.

The moment we allow the threats of bigots to control our decision-making is the very same moment that their terrorism becomes successful. The last thing we should be doing is empowering them with success.

@dreks @jeffjarvis If the intent of the appointments was to antagonize, I'd agree with you. But, as the antagonization is a byproduct, those who feel antagonized need to suck it up and deal with it. We have no obligation to cater to their uncivilized ways to avoid angering them.

@dreks @jeffjarvis I disagree that it's only "political posturing". Having more minorities in leadership positions is one of the most effective ways we currently have of dismantling the systemic bias that exists throughout our justice system.

Trump's picks for SCOTUS justices weren't political posturing... They were furthering an agenda.

I see no reason not to believe the same of Biden's picks.
