Jumping back to the KU+ oshpark board for a bit to run some EM models before ordering it.

Here's one of the diffpairs that I hadn't quite tuned right. You can see that the zero crossings in the waveforms on the P/N legs aren't quite aligned.

@azonenberg transmit on the bottom side or top?

gsuberland, (edited )
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg oh, I meant "which end of the trace (top of bottom of the image) was the output / source?"

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg yeah I did reckon it was from the bottom but wanted to check. I'm guessing shifting the meander to just after the upward turn will help a lot?

Just got a new (US) passport and... WOW. As a security professional I'm impressed.

Spent a while going over it with a microscope and I keep finding more and smaller anti-counterfeiting features.

There's the usual watermarked paper with embedded fibers. But also multi-material multi-layer 3D features, microlenses, laser engraving, microprinting, holograms, solid plastic overlays with microprinting above and below, color changing ink, and more. The passport number and bearer's name/DOB are in so many places it's ridiculous, every time I think I've found all of them I find yet another.

The smallest features I've seen so far are only about 2.3 μm across.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg they're fascinating, right? I did the same with a £20 note when the new ones came out and I must've counted two dozen distinct security features.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg as I understand it, they're more for folks like interpol, and to make it hard enough to duplicate that you'd have to use some pretty specialist materials and equipment, which makes it easier to track down large-scale passport forgers.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg you probably don't need to do much to beat a casual inspection, although I'll tell you first hand that if you're handling stuff all day every day you get a very good sense for the texture and look of the real deal, and all those tiny surface details go a long way to inform that. if it's even slightly off, border folks are pretty likely to look closer. I've caught fake cash before just because the density was slightly off. visually it was near flawless until I looked very closely.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg yup, and if you're setting up shop as a forger you've got to get it good enough that your customers don't get caught, in part because your customers are probably not the kind of people who complain with words, but also because the fake passport is going to end up in the hands of state intelligence and interpol, who are going to have the tools to do full material analysis and meticulously track down sources.

I think I might have finally come up with a workable solution for hosting my DJ sets without annoying restrictions. It isn't free but it's cheap enough that it's viable.

I also have to write some code.

gsuberland,

also tempted to make it available over tor for no reason other than I've never set up a hidden service before (afaik? my memory is bad) and it seems like it'd be fun (if not rather pointless here)

The Railway Departure Board project is pretty much finished I think.

For the most part, it will display the latest message from the @nottinghack Discord. Every five minutes or so, it'll display the departure board from Nottingham Railway Station. It does a few other things, like show which doorbell is being rung.

Video of the departure board showing a recent Discord message: "

What do the Goa'uld say when they want to measure the light quality of a white LED?

Jaffa, CRI!

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@tnt there are calibrator tools but they're still fairly high cost.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@tnt @felix it wouldn't be very useful for that. 14ch is nowhere near enough to give you good measurements because you wouldn't be able to identify the primaries. it'd be barely more helpful than a 3-channel.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@tnt @felix I wrote about this in more detail in a conversation with someone else a while back: https://chaos.social/@gsuberland/111904033084730434

they're making a new Tron movie, which is cool in theory, but the "AI makes first contact with humans" angle has me worried that it's a rushed cash grab trying to capitalise on recent ML hype rather than something they actually had a compelling story for.
