It may not look like it, but it's one of the coolest and most important construction sites in Poland. Here will be one of the service sites for the first Polish offshore wind farm. Ships will moor here to take supplies and people to manage the wind turbines. Poland is finally going into offshore wind.

It just hit me: how do creationists explain the existence of dogs? Especially the fact that there are different breeds of dogs.

I reinstalled the OS on my desktop, and now I have Debian 12 Bookworm, with KDE desktop env, which is running Wayland on a NVIDIA RTX2060.

And now I learned how a bad combination it is.

It works just fine on the default opensource drivers, but I had to install the NVIDIA ones to run . And I will probably need them for Pixinsight.

Took me a while to make it work, and now there is a lot of screen tearing.

Lol.

Looks like Starship is disintegrating on reentry. Good. More failures mean postponing the pollution of space.

I used to enjoy watching Everyday Astronaut videos and life feeds, but now I can't stand him, knowing how much he is simping to Elon, he even bought a wankpanzer

I found a good deal on a used GTX1060 6GB, which I could use for some basic inference in my homelab.

Or I could splurt on a 4060Ti 16GB which would go to my desktop, and my current 2060 would go to my homelab.

Decisions, decisions

main advantage of approach 1 is I won't spend much money, but I will buy a rather obsolete GPU.

main advantage of approach 2 is that I will have two quite modern GPUs that should handle more stuff in the upcoming years, but that will be a lot of money

@JLW_the_Jobber that is a very good point, thanks!

ai6yr, to beer
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Need to buy a case of cheap beer, but feels strange to plan to buy the cheapest beer you can find early in the morning, on bicycle. (it's for slugs in the garden, LOL).

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@ai6yr I was curious how one can fight slugs with beer, and I found this epic work of cinematography https://www.gardenmyths.com/how-to-get-rid-slugs-with-beer/

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@ai6yr I think it depends on the walls of the container. I suspect that if the walls were higher and provided less grip, the slugs would not be able to get out so easily

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@ai6yr ...or you can make them a nice ladder, and hope it will be the hangover that defeats them

I've started reading about the Raspberry Pi AI kit, and about Hoarder, a self-hosted app that supports local inferencing with llama3, and again I feel the urge to go back to learning the reasonable part of AI.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

Because yes, I believe that are some reasonable uses for AI despite all that absurd hype that is everywhere.

Like for example what Frigate is doing, image recognition for CCTV. Or Hoarder's functionality of automatically tagging bookmarks.

stfn, (edited )
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

Maybe leave the "AI" naming for that hype stuff, and go back to the good old "Machine Learning" term for the reasonable, actually useful part?

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@mechanlou depends on the usecase

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@mechanlou for example using AI to generate spammy click-bait articles to flood the internet

I am back to listening to Deathmole (https://deathmole.bandcamp.com/album/permanence-2)

Raspberry Pi just launched their $70 AI Kit with the Hailo-8L NPU. I tested it and used it to build a custom 51 TOPS CoPilot+ PC—without Windows! Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgIMJbN0DS0
