I am back to listening to Deathmole (https://deathmole.bandcamp.com/album/permanence-2)

It's a virtual band playing instrumental metal, created by Jeph Jacques, the writer of https://www.questionablecontent.net/

A regular question for #BOINC people:

How are you doing? What are you crunching? An
ything interesting to share?

So I'm reading the The European Electricity Review, and its full of good news, with some precautions.

The most important part is:

Record falls in EU coal and gas electricity generation push power sector emissions down 19% in 2023!

Mastodon's (at least I think it's Mastodon's?) option to mute retoots from an account is a life changer. I feel there is too much traffic on my timeline lately, but I don't want to unfollow people, so muting retoots from some accounts will be a good first step to calm things down

My new watch just arrived! It's not smart, but it's the smartest. No notifications, no apps, no hacking target, will work for decades.

New blog post!

In which I write how I replaced Strava with my own private solution that does not depend on any cloud service.

And also some stories about the bikes I owned.

Sooo, PiHole running on my NAS suddenly decided that it cannot handle my laptop's traffic, because the laptop is not on the same local network. Which it is. It's on the exact same WiFi network, in the same 192.168.0.xxx space.

For now I just turned on handling non-local DNS requests in PiHole settings, I'm too tired today to go deep into the problem.

So, continuing the theme of a selfhosted, searchable photo gallery, I will stay with PhotoPrism for now.

Immich is interesting, but from what I've checked in the documentation, you need to upload photos to its database, it will not use existing photo folders, and this is a dealbreaker for me.

Hey people, I am looking for a solution that will analyse the photos from my smartphone, guess what's on them and allow searching by thing or place. You know, something that iPhotos does on an iPhone. Any suggestions?

Now this is a beast

Fun fact, in #boinc it took this gpu 24 hours to crunch an Einstein@Home task. For comparison, my RTX2060 did in 8 minutes

Boeing 747-8F, reg number N620UP, owned by UPS, flying from Dover to Rzeszów a few weeks ago.

The same photo as before, cropped to better show the detail on the plane. The engine intakes can be seen clearly.

HI there, I haven't been here for the last few days, but I'm back.

So, how are things?

A lot happened in the last few days. A news aggregator site wrote about my newest blog post, and gave my blog a ton of traffic, that was nice.

What was even nicer was that I spent the weekend at a very chill stag party

New blog post!

This one took weeks to write. It's about me finding a way to significantly reduce the power consumption of a Raspberry Pi Pico W working as a weather station, collecting environmental data.

I am also writing about powering the Pico using solar panels, and this time it's a success, my weather station can now run indefinitely, powered by the sun!

Resolving local address in my LAN stopped working today. I can no longer visit homelab.local, but I can go to 192.168.0.110. And judging by previous experience, it will work again tomorrow. DNS is magic.

This is how all cities should look like, this is the beauty of post-war modernist design. Blocks of flats, covered in greenery, with public transport and clear separation of vehicular traffic.

My new fav subreddit is https://www.reddit.com/r/CyberStuck/ Listing all the bad things happening with the Wankpanzer.

The best part of this image is that you can actually reset the cybertruck by getting out and back in again. Truly IT Crowd vibes.

Pineberry Pi is renaming to Pineboards, and they are launching some new boards. I'm excited for them, they are a small Polish company that makes boards for Raspberry Pi 5.

Apple's says its environmentally friendly, and at the same time destroys perfectly usable devices to raise demand for new ones. And sues a company that sold those usable devices instead of shredding them. Good job Apple. https://9to5mac.com/2024/04/18/100000-iphones-stolen-instead-of-scrapped/

After some consideration and with caution, I have created a space on Matrix, and I invite everyone who is interested in things like IT, hamradio, LoRa, BOINC, meshtastic, offgrid and similar topics.

There is a few rooms so far, but the structure is not set in stone, we'll see what works and what doesn't.
